Role: Scada Engineer for Utility Scale Battery Energy Storage System projects

Department: Project Delivery – Trina Energy Storage

Reports to: Project Manager, Utility-Scale Energy Storage

Role Overview

Trina Energy Storage is seeking one highly motivated and technically skilled Scada Engineer to support the delivery of utility‑scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across Australia. These roles will provide critical engineering support throughout the lifecycle of BESS projects—from design and procurement, to construction, commissioning, and handover.

As a key interface between Trina's local project team, customers, subcontractors, and our global product and R&D teams, the Project Engineer must possess a solid technical background in battery storage systems and strong communication skills. Proficiency in both English and Mandarin is required, as the role involves frequent coordination and technical discussions with our Mandarin‑speaking headquarters and global engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities
SCADA System Design & Integration
  • Support the design, configuration, integration, and commissioning of SCADA systems for utility‑scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
  • Review and validate SCADA architecture, communication networks, signal lists, interface control documents (ICD), and point mapping schedules.
  • Configure and troubleshoot communication interfaces between SCADA, EMS, PPC, PCS, BMS, Gateway RTU, protection relays, meters, and auxiliary systems.
  • Coordinate with internal R&D teams, SCADA vendors, EMS suppliers, and third‑party integrators to ensure successful system integration.
  • Support implementation and validation of communication protocols including Modbus TCP/IP, DNP3, IEC 61850, OPC UA, and MQTT where applicable.
  • Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning, and operational readiness testing of SCADA systems.
  • Verify point‑to‑point communications, alarm functionality, event logging, historian data, control commands, and system performance.
  • Perform troubleshooting of communication failures, signal quality issues, time synchronization problems, and control system interactions.
  • Support AEMO hold point testing activities, including validation of SCADA interfaces associated with AGC, FCAS, dispatch targets, ramp rate controls, and plant availability signals.
  • Assist with testing and validation of DNP3 quality flags, communication failover logic, heartbeat monitoring, and remote‑control functions.
Control System & Grid Integration Support
  • Coordinate integration between SCADA, EMS, PPC, Gateway RTU, and external market/operator interfaces.
  • Support implementation and validation of:
    1. AGC (Automatic Generation Control)
    2. FCAS / PFR functions
    3. Ramp Rate Control
    4. AVR / Reactive Power Control
    5. Voltage Droop Functions
    6. Dispatch Target Processing
    7. Availability Calculations
  • Assist with troubleshooting control logic issues during commissioning and performance testing.
  • Support compliance activities related to AEMO, NSP, and Generator Registration requirements.
Documentation & Quality Assurance
  • Review and maintain:
    1. SCADA Functional Design Specifications (FDS)
    2. Interface Control Documents (ICD)
    3. Communication Matrixes
    4. Point Lists
    5. Test Procedures
    6. Technical Change Requests
Qualifications and Skills
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Control Systems Engineering, Automation Engineering, Power Systems, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience in SCADA, EMS, control systems, renewable energy, or utility‑scale infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of:
    1. Power system monitoring and control
    2. Network communications and cybersecurity fundamentals
