Job summary

BAE Systems Australia is recruiting for a Safety Engineer to lead Safety In Design, System Safety and Product Safety activities for the JORN Acquisition program in the Jindalee/Edinburgh Parks VIC/Melbourne Central region. You will identify hazards, assess risks and drive mitigation strategies within a Defence context.

Reporting to the JORN Product Safety Manager, you will develop safety artefacts, support engineering teams with safety solutions and advise on safety engineering practices.

Qualifications

• Safety engineering experience or engineering/manufacturing background with knowledge of safety engineering.

Responsibilities

• Develop and update safety artefacts including system safety program plans, hazard analyses, hazard logs and safety case reports.
• Support other delivery teams with safety engineering solutions and advise on methodology.
• Act as technical adviser on safety engineering and build relationships with stakeholders.
• Review problem reports, variances and engineering changes for potential safety impacts.
• Maintain product safety risk assessments and share best practices.

Purpose of Job

Reporting to the JORN Product Safety Manager, you will undertake safety engineering (Safety In Design/System Safety/Product Safety) activities including the management of hazards: identification, assessment and mitigation of hazards.

Principal Accountabilities

• Develop and update safety engineering artefacts including system safety program plans, hazard analysis reports, hazard logs and safety case reports to ensure risks are reduced
• Support other product delivery teams with the delivery of safety engineering solutions and provide recommendations for using safety engineering methodology
• Act as point of contact and provide technical advice on safety engineering activities, collaborating effectively and build good relationships with internal and external stakeholders
• Participate in the identification, preparation and review of problem reports, variances (waivers and deviations) and engineering changes to assess potential safety impacts
• Undertake the development and maintenance of product safety risk assessments
• Seek and share good practice and knowledge to continuously improve safety engineering practices

Key criteria

• Safety engineering experience or engineering/manufacturing experience with knowledge of safety engineering
• A relevant engineering or manufacturing/trade qualification
• Knowledge of the engineering systems development lifecycle, and an understanding/awareness of safety engineering standards
• Good communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to develop effective relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders
• Good problem solving skills and the ability to produce effective technical reports
• Defence security clearance or eligibility to obtain
