Job summary

Hume City Council is seeking a Safety Advisor to join the established Safety Team in a Permanent Full Time role. Reporting to the Coordinator Occupational Health and Safety, you will provide practical safety advice across a diverse local government environment and support incident response and risk assessments.

Based in New South Wales, the position focuses on meaningful risk ownership, consultation and building capability within business areas.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience providing practical safety advice, supporting incident investigations and facilitating risk assessments in a complex or operational environment.

Responsibilities

• Provide practical, responsive safety advice and support to leaders, employees, contractors and work groups across Council.
• Build trusted relationships and spend time in Council workplaces to understand how work is performed and whether safety controls are effective in practice.
• Support leaders with incident response, investigations and corrective actions, helping business areas build the capability to manage routine safety matters.
• Facilitate risk assessments and support the development of practical safe work procedures and other safety documentation in consultation with the people who perform the work.
• Work alongside Safety Business Partners to translate broader safety priorities into practical actions and embed sustainable improvements in operational areas.
• Support the implementation and verification of critical controls identified through Council’s Safety Risk Register.
• Provide advice across a range of physical and psychological health and safety risks, including occupational violence and aggression, hazardous manual handling, mobile plant, traffic management, high-risk work, hazardous substances and contractor safety.
• Develop and deliver practical training and safety information, participate in workplace inspections and consultation, and use incident, hazard and assurance information to identify opportunities for improvement.

Join Hume City Council’s established Safety Team as a Safety Advisor. Reporting to the Coordinator Occupational Health and Safety, you will work alongside two Safety Business Partners and another Safety Advisor to provide practical, responsive and primarily in-person safety support across a diverse local government environment.

This is an exciting time to join the team as we progress through the second year of our four-year safety maturity plan and continue implementing a refreshed safety framework. Our focus is on stronger risk ownership, meaningful consultation, proactive support and sustainable safety improvements.

The Safety Advisor will work closely with leaders and employees to provide practical advice, support incident response and investigation, facilitate risk assessments and help embed improvements into everyday work. Working alongside the Safety Business Partners, the role will support business areas to build their capability and take greater ownership of routine safety activities, while ensuring appropriate advice and assistance remain available.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

• Demonstrated experience providing practical safety advice, supporting incident investigations and facilitating risk assessments in a complex or operational environment.
• Sound knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, contemporary risk management and safety management systems, with the ability to translate technical requirements into practical solutions.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage frontline employees, leaders, Health and Safety Representatives and other stakeholders.
• Ability to work collaboratively with Safety Business Partners and operational areas to implement and embed sustainable safety improvements.
• Sound judgement, curiosity and practical problem-solving skills, including the ability to manage competing priorities and recognise when an issue requires escalation.

Qualifications and requirements

• A qualification in Occupational Health and Safety, risk, allied health, human factors, psychology or a related discipline will be well regarded. Applicants with significant and relevant safety experience in a complex environment will also be considered.
• A current and valid driver’s licence is required.
