Job summary

Clayton Utz in Sydney is seeking a Risk & Compliance Advisor to join the National Risk & Compliance team. You will support governance and regulatory obligations across our national operations, providing pragmatic risk advice to help foster a risk-aware culture.

The role oversees third-party risk, modern slavery compliance, policy updates, and reporting to senior leadership. A tertiary qualification in Business or Law and 2–3 years in risk management within professional services are preferred.

  • 2–3 years of relevant experience in Risk Management within a commercial organisation.
  • Familiarity with Operational Risk, Risk Appetite Statements and Frameworks, AML/CTF, Modern Slavery, and Procurement/Supply Chain risk in a professional services environment.

  • Oversee third-party and supplier risk management processes, ensuring modern slavery compliance.
  • Review and update firm modern slavery statement and other risk policies as required.
  • Triage, address and escalate internal queries related to risk management and compliance.
  • Ensure operational alignment with risk and compliance processes and frameworks.
  • Coordinate and prepare risk and compliance reports for senior leadership.

The Role

We currently have a rewarding opportunity for a motivated Risk & Compliance Advisor to join our National Risk & Compliance team based in Sydney. This role is pivotal to the firm's central risk management, governance and compliance strategy. Working closely with the National Risk Manager and alongside various business groups across the firm, you will play a key role in ensuring the firm appropriately mitigating risk and is compliant with legal regulatory obligations across our national operations. You will provide commercial, pragmatic advice on all areas of risk as relevant to the legal sector. You will also help to drive a 'risk aware' culture within the firm.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee third-party and supplier risk management processes, ensuring modern slavery compliance.
  • Review and update firm modern slavery statement and other risk policies as required.
  • Triage, address and, where required, elevate internal queries related to risk management and compliance.
  • Ensure operational alignment with risk and compliance processes and frameworks.
  • Coordinate and prepare risk and compliance reports, including risk appetite statements and dashboard for senior leadership.
  • Manage and coordinate business continuity and crisis management plans.
  • Foster a culture of risk awareness through workshops, training, and day-to-day operations.
  • Facilitate meetings, working groups and governance forums across business teams to track compliance activities and risk initiatives.
Skills & Experience
  • Tertiary level qualifications, ideally in Business or Law or a similar discipline.
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience in Risk Management, gained a reputable commercial organisation.
  • Familiarity with Operational Risk, Risk Appetite Statements and Frameworks, AML/CTF, Modern Slavery, Procurement/Supply Chain risk management within a professional services environment is highly advantageous.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in data collection and analysis, with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Demonstrable critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Self-starting, resilient nature with a proactive learning mindset.
  • A positive and flexible attitude, capable of working efficiently both in a team and autonomously.
