Job summary

Novalith is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join our Alexandria, NSW lab, supporting the R&D team in refining lithium recovery processes. You will run tests, operate pilot plant equipment, maintain records and contribute to safe, GLP-compliant operations.

The ideal candidate has a chemistry or metallurgy background, 2+ years in a chemical laboratory, and a hands-on mindset. This full-time role offers growth in a fast-moving clean-tech scale-up.

Qualifications

  • University Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years’ relevant research assistant or chemical/metallurgical laboratory experience or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience conducting experiments and maintaining equipment.
  • Knowledge of GLP and WHS regulations and promoting a safe working environment.
  • Thermodynamics and kinetics knowledge; R&D commercialisation and mineral processing exposure desirable.
  • Able to lift up to 25 kg and torque bolts up to 65+ Nm.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office and lab programs, with good records.
  • Class C NSW Driver’s License.
  • Ability to work in a team or autonomously with good time management.
  • Enthusiasm for multicultural teams.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in design and setup of reactor systems, gas handling and concentration systems.
  • Conduct laboratory tests and experiments to support lithium-recovery processes.
  • Operate laboratory equipment with proper calibration and maintenance.
  • Analyze data and maintain accurate results, observations and deviations.
  • Prepare technical reports and present findings at internal meetings.
  • Collaborate with team to troubleshoot testing issues and develop improvements.
  • Promote a safe working environment by adhering to WHS regulations.

About The Opportunity

We are a rapidly growing scale-up focused on cleaner, more efficient lithium extraction, particularly the processing of Australian spodumene and other lithium containing materials. Sitting in the R&D team, the Research Assistant will partner closely with our Research Scientists, R&D Operations Manager and CTO on exciting projects to refine Novalith’s existing processes and develop our science further.

The ideal candidate should have relevant experience in a chemical, metallurgical, or mineral resources laboratory, knowledge of GLP and WHS, and possess excellent technical skills. This is a full-time position with opportunities for growth and learning in an exciting, young industry.

Responsibilities
  • Undertake and assist in the research, design, development and operation of the Company’s laboratory and pilot plant equipment, contributing to the development of Novalith’s technologies.
  • Assist in the design and setup of reactor systems, gas handling, concentration systems and related equipment.
  • Conduct laboratory tests and experiments to support our lithium-recovery process, following established protocols for sample preparation, analysis and data recording.
  • Operate laboratory equipment, ensuring proper functioning and calibration.
  • Assist in data analysis of analytical characterisation and experimental data, and maintain accurate records of results, observations, procedures and any deviations.
  • Conduct background research and literature reviews relating to projects.
  • Participate in fieldwork or pilot plant trials as needed.
  • Perform general support tasks including sourcing and updating materials inventory, equipment and supplies.
  • Prepare technical reports and present findings at internal company meetings.
  • Collaborate with team members to troubleshoot issues that arise during testing and assist in developing new testing methods or improvements to existing ones.
  • Promote a safe working environment by adhering to WHS regulations and taking responsibility for safe laboratory operations.
About The Ideal Candidate
  • A University Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy, Physics, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 2 years’ relevant research assistant or chemical/metallurgical laboratory experience or equivalent.
  • Previous hands-on experience conducting experiments, troubleshooting and maintaining equipment.
  • Knowledge of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), familiarity with Workplace Health & Safety (WHS) regulations, and an ability to promote a safe working environment.
  • Good knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics; experience with R&D commercialisation, mineral leaching and mineral carbonation is desirable.
  • Ability to lift/carry up to 25 kg and torque bolts up to 65+ Nm when required for experimental setups or equipment maintenance tasks.
  • Good computer skills, including Microsoft Office and laboratory programs, with strong quantitative and analytical skills and good record keeping.
  • Class C NSW Driver’s License or equivalent.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment and autonomously, with strong attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
  • Enthusiasm for working within a multicultural team.
Job Details

  • Salary range: $80,000 to $95,000 base per annum, plus superannuation, depending on skills and experience.
