Amazon Leo is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Reliability Engineer to drive design for reliability in Amazon Leo hardware systems. This role will be responsible for developing and leading various reliability activities during product development and through the life of the product. It will require interfacing closely with subsystem teams, providing technical input and guidance on designs, and supporting as needed for reliability analysis and testing.

The ideal candidate will have experience in using Physics-of-Failure based models to develop and implement both analytical and empirical solutions for product quality/reliability risk identification and assessment during the product design, manufacturing, testing and deployment stages. The candidate should be able to drive Amazon Leo's requirements by carrying out stress driven risk analysis, including thermal, electrical and mechanical stresses in order to identify over-stress and fatigue-related product weaknesses. They should also be comfortable in assessing electronics manufacturing process related quality/reliability issues.

At the component level, the individual will drive critical component identification, support vendor selection and define component qualification requirements. The candidate will also be expected to use their knowledge of PCBA manufacturing, electronic component derating, as well as system-level performance requirements to establish critical quality and reliability metrics.

At the system level, the candidate will support development of system level reliability models and perform reliability assessments and risk analyses for optimization of design. The candidate will also be expected to be familiar with system reliability engineering tools, such as reliability block diagram, statistical modeling and on orbit data analytics.

Export Control Requirement

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

  • Define sample sizes and test specifications to demonstrate target reliability and confidence numbers
  • Develop subsystem reliability models and establish reliability allocations across components to meet reliability targets.
  • Review, guide, and support subsystem team component selections, derating and FMEAs
  • Support component and manufacturing process qualification
  • Drive root cause investigation and failure analysis for hardware failures
Basic Qualifications
  • Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures

  • Familiarity with electronics (PCBs, PCBAs, electronic components) and moving mechanical assemblies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or Doctorate degree or above in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with environmental testing, including temperature cycling, vibration, highly accelerated limit testing (HALT), and highly-accelerated stress screening (HASS).
  • Basic knowledge of PCB fabrication, SMT, and polymerics application manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards, including IPC, JEDEC, AIAA, AEC, MIL, and SMC standards.
