Job description

Job Description

Your role at St John of God Geelong Hospital

We are seeking passionate and motivated Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses to join our dynamic Medical/Surgical Department on a permanent part-time basis, working 30 hours per week.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work within a busy and supportive surgical environment caring for patients across a diverse range of specialties, including breast and thoracic surgery, as well as colorectal and gastroenterology surgery.

You will provide high-quality, patient-centred care throughout the surgical journey, while further developing your clinical assessment, prioritisation, decision-making and post-operative nursing skills. You will work alongside an experienced and supportive multidisciplinary team, with opportunities to broaden your knowledge across a range of surgical presentations and procedures.

If you are an experienced Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse who enjoys working in a dynamic clinical environment and is passionate about delivering exceptional surgical care, we would love to hear from you.

The Position
  • Provides safe, comprehensive and compassionate nursing care to patients undergoing surgical procedures and recovering from surgery, in accordance with St John of God Health Care policies, procedures and Care Paths.
  • Undertakes comprehensive pre- and post-operative assessments, recognising changes in clinical condition and escalating care appropriately.
  • Provides high-quality post-operative nursing care, including pain and symptom management, wound and drain care, medication administration, neurovascular observations, mobilisation and monitoring for potential complications.
  • Supports patients throughout their surgical journey, including preparation for procedures, post-operative recovery, rehabilitation and discharge planning.
  • Provides care to patients across a range of surgical specialties, including breast and thoracic, colorectal and gastroenterology surgery.
  • Prioritises and coordinates care according to individual patient needs, ensuring timely assessment, intervention, monitoring and escalation where required.
  • Works collaboratively with medical, allied health and nursing teams to assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for allocated patients.
  • Maintains effective communication with patients, families and the multidisciplinary team, providing clear clinical handover and accurate, timely documentation.
  • Supports patients and families through education and discharge planning, ensuring they understand their post-operative care requirements, medications, follow-up and ongoing management
About You

You will hold current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse, along with recent clinical experience within an acute hospital or surgical environment.

Previous surgical nursing experience will be highly regarded, particularly experience caring for patients within breast and thoracic, colorectal or gastroenterology surgery. However, experience in these specialties is not essential, and we encourage applications from Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nurses with strong acute clinical skills and a genuine interest in developing their surgical nursing expertise.

To succeed in this role, you will have well-developed clinical assessment, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide safe and effective care in a busy acute surgical environment. You will demonstrate sound clinical judgement, strong prioritisation and problem‑solving skills, and the ability to recognise and respond appropriately to changes in a patient's condition.

You will be a collaborative and compassionate Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse who is committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care and creating a positive experience for patients and their families. A commitment to ongoing education, professional development and working effectively within a multidisciplinary team will be essential.

Above all, patient care will be at the core of everything you do, committing to and supporting our Mission and Values.

  • Salary: $67,387 - $88,938 (pro rata for part time), plus 12% superannuation
