Job summary

South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) invites applications for a Registered Nurse in the Cardiothoracic Unit at Prince of Wales Hospital. The role focuses on high-quality perioperative and postoperative care for cardiothoracic patients within a supportive, learning-rich environment.

You will join a multidisciplinary team, engage in ongoing professional development through in-house training, and gain exposure to complex procedures across CABG, valve repairs, and thoracic surgeries.

Qualifications

• Registered with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse (RN) or Midwife.
• Demonstrated recent clinical experience in a Cardiothoracic setting.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team and maintain professional boundaries.
• Proven ability to use health information systems.

Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care to cardiothoracic patients pre- and post-operation.
• Monitor and respond to patient needs in a high-acuity unit.

Our 14-bed Cardiothoracic Surgery Ward provides specialised care to patients throughout their surgical journey, delivering high-quality care to both pre-operative and post-operative cardiothoracic surgery patients. As part of a dynamic and highly skilled multidisciplinary team, you will have the opportunity to care for a diverse and complex patient cohort while developing advanced clinical skills in a supportive learning environment.

• Maze Procedures performed in conjunction with CABG or valve surgery
• Complex Aortic Surgery
• Resection of Cardiac and Mediastinal Tumours
• Lung Resection Surgery, including Lobectomy, Wedge Resection and Segmentectomy
• Management of Thoracic Trauma

Nurses in our unit have opportunities to develop specialised clinical knowledge and competencies including:

• Comprehensive wound assessment and management
• Cardiac monitoring and rhythm interpretation
• Advanced Life Support (ALS)
• Chest drain management and removal
• Central Venous Access Device (CVAD) management and removal
• Epicardial pacing management
• Removal of epicardial pacing wires
• Recognition and management of the deteriorating patient
• Post-operative cardiothoracic surgical care and recovery

Prince of Wales Hospital and Community Health Service is a Level 6 Tertiary Referral Hospital with an inpatient bed base of 370. Each year we care for more than 70,000 patients in our Emergency Department and have around 50,000 admissions to the inpatient units. POWH offers an outpatient service and rural outreach service and provides more than 900,000 occasions of non-admitted patient care each year, including innovative virtual models of care. We have transitioned the majority of inpatient units and wards to the Acute Services Building (ASB) including a state of the art Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit. Selection Criteria

• Registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse/ Midwife.
• Demonstrated recent clinical experience as a Registered Nurse that applies to a Cardiothoracic clinical setting
• Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills, interpersonal skills and be able to identify key messages, issues and concerns when communicating with others.
• Ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team and apply professional and ethical boundaries when dealing with complex situations.
• Current computer skills and proven ability to use health information systems.
• Demonstrated ability to advocate for and implement person-centred practice.
• Demonstrated application of evidence-based practice and critical thinking to patient care.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritise and organise own workload.
