Job description

Glaucoma & Acute Care Ophthalmic Specialist | Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

Company:

Company: Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

The post is comprised of 10 programmed activities (PAs), of which 8 are Direct Clinical Care (DCC) and 2 are Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs).

The post is based across St George’s Hospital and Croydon University Hospital, supporting delivery of glaucoma outpatient services across both sites. The proposed job plan is detailed below; however, it may be subject to change in response to service demand and operational priorities.

The post holder will contribute to a combination of:

  • Face-to-face glaucoma clinics at Croydon & St George’s
  • Rapid Access & Urgent Care Clinic session at Croydon & St George’s
  • Virtual glaucoma review clinics
  • Administrative and SPA activity

The Croydon University Hospital sessions include dedicated glaucoma follow-up clinics, working alongside multidisciplinary colleagues including consultants, optometrists and nursing staff. These clinics require a clinician able to work independently, as a significant proportion of patients require clinical decision-making and management planning. One session will be a Rapid-Access clinic involving triaging patients and seeing emergency patients as appropriate.

The St George’s sessions include high-volume follow-up glaucoma clinics and virtual review activity, as well as an Urgent Care acute clinic session.

The post holder will work closely with the glaucoma multidisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive outpatient service to a diverse patient population across Southwest London. The role requires the ability to manage patients autonomously within agreed protocols, with appropriate escalation of complex cases.

The post holder has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of the service.

  • The post holder has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and for the proper functioning of the service, allowing for all appropriate delegation to and training for their staff.
  • The post holder is responsible for the day-to-day management of his/her clinics and must ensure that in/outpatient services are covered during his/her planned absences. Participation in episodes of shared care requires the post holder to provide advice and support to clinicians in other services with regard to patients who may have a combination of ocular problems.
