Job description

  • Make a real impact on rail infrastructure across Australia
  • Deliver engineering solutions that put safety, reliability and value first
  • Safely Every Day — That’s Our Promise
Join Pacific National – Australia’s largest private rail freight operator

Every day we transport millions of tonnes of critical freight around the country for our customers. We haul coal, intermodal containers, steel, and bulk commodities that keep Australia moving.

An opportunity has presented itself for a RIM Asset Engineer to join our team in Sydney, supporting rail infrastructure assets across our national network.

What You’ll Do

You’ll provide engineering expertise and technical support to maintain, improve and deliver safe, reliable and cost-effective rail infrastructure assets across Pacific National’s network.

Reporting to the RIM Asset Manager, you will:

  • Provide engineering support for rail infrastructure asset management and project delivery, including track, turnouts, rail structures, signalling and overhead line equipment.
  • Support the development and delivery of maintenance plans, project schedules, budgets and resource plans to achieve agreed outcomes.
  • Review engineering designs, specifications and work processes to ensure compliance with Australian Standards, regulatory requirements and Pacific National’s RIM standards.
  • Support testing, commissioning, defect rectification and technical investigations to improve asset reliability and performance.
  • Work closely with internal teams, contractors and other stakeholders to coordinate engineering activities, monitor delivery performance and resolve technical issues.
  • Contribute to asset management plans, technical maintenance plans, tender documentation and business cases, while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and value.
What You’ll Bring
  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, preferably in rail infrastructure or a related discipline.
  • Two to five years of rail industry engineering experience, ideally in rail infrastructure management, asset management or project delivery.
  • Registered engineering status, or a willingness and ability to obtain registration within 12 months.
  • Knowledge of rail infrastructure standards, safety legislation, risk management principles and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across technical teams, contractors and operational stakeholders.
  • An analytical, solutions-focused approach, with the ability to identify risks, investigate asset issues and deliver practical engineering outcomes.
  • Familiarity with asset management systems (Maximo) and project management tools (Microsoft Project).
  • A current driver’s licence, a General Construction Induction Card (White Card) and Safety Access the Rail Corridor (SARC) accreditation.

Applicants must be willing and able to undertake regular interstate travel across Pacific National's operational network, including Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales. Travel is an essential requirement of the role to support project delivery and may involve extended periods away from the employee's usual place of work or residence.
