Job description

  • Lead projects that support Australia’s essential freight network
  • Drive safe delivery, strong commercial outcomes and lasting infrastructure improvements
  • Safely Every Day — That’s Our Promise

Join Pacific National – Australia’s largest private rail freight operator

Every day we transport millions of tonnes of critical freight around the country for our customers. We haul coal, intermodal containers, steel, and bulk commodities that keep Australia moving.

An opportunity has presented itself for an Infrastructure Project Manager to join our team in Sydney, leading the delivery of infrastructure projects across our national network.

What You’ll Do

You’ll manage infrastructure projects from planning through to delivery, ensuring they are completed safely, on time, within budget and to the required quality standards.

Reporting to the Project Lead, you will:

  • Develop and manage comprehensive project plans covering scope, schedules, budgets, tenders, resources and delivery milestones.
  • Oversee multiple projects and work packages concurrently, monitoring progress against project baselines and addressing risks or delays to keep delivery on track.
  • Coordinate contractors, suppliers and multidisciplinary teams across a range of infrastructure projects, including civil works, pavements, buildings, electrical systems and facilities.
  • Maintain a strong on-site presence at key planning and delivery milestones to monitor progress, resolve issues, manage defects and ensure quality standards are met.
  • Manage project budgets, forecasts, expenditure approvals and contract performance, identifying cost variances and implementing corrective actions to achieve financial objectives.
  • Identify and manage project risks, developing mitigation strategies and escalating critical issues with clear recommendations.
  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, customers, contractors, regulatory bodies and community representatives through clear communication and proactive engagement.
  • Ensure project activities comply with relevant legislation, Australian Standards, safety requirements and quality management processes.
  • Monitor contractor and supplier performance, address non-conformances and identify opportunities to improve delivery outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with maintenance and operational teams to support successful project completion and integration into ongoing operations.
What You’ll Bring
  • Relevant Australian project management qualifications, such as CPPM or PMP.
  • A degree in engineering, project management or construction management, or relevant trade qualifications in rail or construction, which would be highly regarded.
  • Two to ten years of infrastructure or construction project management experience, ideally with an asset delivery service provider or in a client-facing role.
  • Demonstrated experience managing project budgets, negotiating contracts, controlling costs and delivering commercially sound outcomes.
  • Strong knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation, rail safety requirements, risk management and relevant Australian Standards.
  • Proven stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to build productive relationships with contractors, customers, government agencies and internal teams.
  • Strong planning, organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with project management tools such as Microsoft Project, asset management systems such as Maximo, and project management methodologies.
  • A current driver’s licence, Safety Access the Rail Corridor (SARC) accreditation and General Construction Induction Card (White Card).

Applicants must be willing and able to undertake regular interstate travel across Pacific National's operational network, including Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales. Travel is an essential requirement of the role to support project delivery and may involve extended periods away from the employee's usual place of work or residence.
