Job summary

The University of Melbourne invites applications for the Australian Tree of Life Software Developer role within Australian BioCommons. You will design and build APIs, databases and automation to connect genomics data with real-world decisions, collaborating with bioinformaticians and researchers.

Your work will involve PostgreSQL databases, FastAPI services, secure coding and CI/CD practices on Linux, with opportunities for career development and flexible work arrangements.

Qualifications

  • Degree in software engineering, computer science or bioinformatics, or equivalent industry experience.
  • At least two years’ experience as a software developer on production systems.
  • Experience building relational databases and API backends using Python, FastAPI and OpenAPI specifications.
  • Experience with CI/CD, GitHub workflows, containerisation and Linux deployments.
  • Ability to deliver clear, modern interfaces and status views for users.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, deploy and maintain PostgreSQL databases and FastAPI-based services for AToL data management.
  • Design, implement and monitor data pipelines and automation across the AToL and BioCommons platforms.
  • Apply secure coding, dependency management and access controls to deliver robust infrastructure services.
  • Collaborate with product owners and analysts to refine user stories and deliver intuitive features.
  • Create automated tests, release pipelines and technical documentation for long-term operations.
