Job summary

The University of Melbourne is hiring a Software Developer to lead core development for the Australian Tree of Life data platform. You will build APIs, databases and automation that connect genomics data with real-world decisions.

You will collaborate daily with bioinformaticians and researchers in a nationally distributed team, design secure, scalable services and contribute to long-term platform operations with tests, pipelines and documentation.

Qualifications

• Hold a degree in software engineering, computer science or bioinformatics, or equivalent industry experience.
• Bring at least two years’ experience as a software developer working on production systems.
• Build and maintain relational databases and API backends using Python, FastAPI and OpenAPI specifications.
• Apply CI/CD practices, including GitHub workflows, containerisation and deployment on Linux-based environments.
• Understand and apply UX best practices, delivering clear, modern interfaces and status views for users.
• Collaborate effectively in distributed teams, communicating clearly, following leadership and embracing continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement and monitor data pipelines and automation across theAToLandBioCommonsplatforms.
