Job summary

University of Melbourne Bioinformatics team is seeking a dedicated Bioinformatician to lead training and capacity building for regional public health genomics across the Asia-Pacific.

You will design and deliver bioinformatics training, implement and optimise genomic analysis pipelines, collaborate with international partners and contribute to translational research shaping policy in pathogen genomics at Doherty Institute. This fixed-term role offers 17% super and competitive benefits.

Qualifications

• Hold a PhD, Masters or equivalent in bioinformatics, computational biology or a closely related discipline.
• Bring at least five years' bioinformatics and genomics experience, ideally in microbiology or infectious diseases.
• Demonstrate proficiency installing, managing and troubleshooting bioinformatics pipelines, tools and data storage or compute environments.
• Communicate complex genomic analyses clearly through high-quality data visualisation, publications and presentations.
• Possess experience delivering training or teaching in bioinformatics or genomics for diverse scientific and public health audiences.
• Show willingness to travel, collaborate internationally and contribute to capacity building in low-resource settings.

Responsibilities

• Design and deliver bioinformatics training and capacity building programmes for regional public health genomics teams.
• Implement, maintain and optimise analysis pipelines and platforms supporting pathogen genomics in public health laboratories.
• Contribute to translational research, funding applications and publications in microbial genomics and genomic epidemiology.
• Build and nurture communities of practice, mentoring students, postdoctoral researchers and regional partners.
• Represent the Centre in national and international forums, informing policy and best practice in genomic surveillance.
