Job summary

AEMO, Australia’s independent energy system and market operator, is seeking a Power Systems Engineer to coordinate training and assessment activities using the NEM simulator. The role supports the Dispatch Training Simulator (DTS) in Victoria and gains from proximity to Brisbane or Norwest (Bella Vista) offices.

You will collaborate with PSO Specialist Trainers and IT teams to ensure high-quality training and familiarisation before live operations. This permanent, hybrid role focuses on the NEM.

Qualifications

• Bachelor-level or higher in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Strong experience in power system operations and market analysis tools.
• Solid understanding of National Electricity Market operations.
• Knowledge of major Interconnected National Electricity System components.
• Strong understanding of the Control Room role in Operations Power System.

Responsibilities

• Assist uplift of the NEM Simulator as a key control system for risk management.
• Support development and delivery of training and assessment scenarios using the NEM simulator.
• Assist design and creation of training scenarios by altering market data and configuration.
• Assist in developing and maintaining training documentation for the NEM simulator.

About The Role

The Operations Department is central to fulfilling AEMO’s obligations for the operation of the power systems that supports the National Electricity Market (NEM) and Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM), and the gas system that supports the Declared Wholesale Gas Market (DWGM) in Victoria. The Operations Training team provides support to the NEM Real Time Operations (RTO) through delivery of expert training and assessment services utilising the Dispatch Training Simulator (DTS) environment to ensure control room staff receive and maintain the skills training and knowledge requirements to perform at the highest level.

This is a newly created role for an experienced Power Systems Engineer to provide technical coordination and input between the PSO Specialist Trainers and IT teams, supporting the development and delivery of training and assessment activities through the use of simulator technology. It will focus on the NEM.

This role can be based in our Brisbane or Norwest (Bella Vista) offices.

What You Will Be Doing

• Assist in the uplift of the NEM Simulator as a key control system for AEMO’s risk management.
• Support the development and delivery of training and assessment scenarios, utilising NEM simulator and other interactive training applications or techniques including role play, coaching, etc.
• Assist in the planning, design and creation of training scenarios in the NEM simulator through altering market system data and manipulating the power system configuration for the purpose of maintaining and developing control room staff competency to perform the real time Dispatch, Voltage and Security functions for the designated regions of responsibility in accordance with established procedures and standards.
• Assist in the development and maintenance of training documentation for the operation of the NEM simulator.
• Assist in process to implement new or upgraded control room systems and tools in the DTS environment for the purpose of training and familiarisation, prior to going live in the control room.

What You Will Bring To The Role

• Relevant tertiary qualifications (preferably in Electrical Engineering) or equivalent relevant work experience.
• Strong experience in power system operations and in the use of Power System and Market Analysis applications.
• Strong understanding of National Electricity Market operations.
• Knowledge of the function and vulnerability of major Interconnected National Electricity System components.
• Strong understanding of the role the Control Room in the Operations Power System.
