Job summary

Mount Isa Water Board is seeking an experienced Project Lead to plan, execute and commission civil, mechanical, electrical and minor works across our capital project portfolio.

The role is field-based, reporting to the Senior Manager - Capital Program Delivery, with responsibility for delivering projects on time, on budget and to specification while coordinating engineers, contractors and internal stakeholders on-site.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Project Management.
• 7–10 years experience managing medium-sized projects.
• Proven experience managing capital projects or construction works.
• Strong knowledge of project management principles, methodologies and tools.

Responsibilities

• Develop project objectives, scope, deliverables, WBS, timelines, resource allocation and cost estimates.
• Identify risks and hazards and develop mitigation strategies.
• Source, negotiate and manage contracts and vendors per Procurement Policy.
• Coordinate activities of contractors and subcontractors, ensuring schedule adherence and safety.
• Conduct regular site visits to monitor progress and compliance.
• Develop and track budgets, monitor variances and approve invoices and change orders.
• Maintain project documentation and report status to executives.

Project Lead - Capital Projects Division

Mount Isa Water Board is seeking an experienced and hands-on Project Lead to plan, execute and commission civil, mechanical, electrical and minor works across our capital project portfolio.

Reporting to the Senior Manager - Capital Program Delivery, this is a field-based role for someone who is equally comfortable at a desk building a project plan and on site coordinating contractors, and who takes genuine ownership of delivering projects on time, on budget and to spec.

About the role

The Project Lead is responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of capital projects, working closely with engineers, contractors and internal stakeholders to keep delivery on track against agreed budgets, timeframes, compliance and quality standards. The role coordinates multiple stakeholders concurrently in a hands-on, fast-paced environment.

Key responsibilities include:

developing project objectives, scope, deliverables, work breakdown structures, timelines, resource allocation and cost estimates

identifying project risks and hazards and developing mitigation or elimination strategies

sourcing, negotiating and managing contracts and vendors in line with MIWB's Procurement Policy, including contract auditing and reporting

coordinating and overseeing all project activities, contractors and subcontractors, ensuring schedule adherence, quality standards and safety protocols are met

conducting regular site visits and inspections to monitor progress and compliance

developing and tracking project budgets, monitoring variances and approving invoices, change orders and payment requests

managing stakeholder relationships and communicating project updates, progress and key decisions at all levels

maintaining accurate project documentation, preparing progress reports and presenting status updates to the Executive Management Team

conducting post-project evaluations and lessons-learned sessions to drive continuous improvement.

About you

You will be an organised, relationship-driven project management professional with a track record of delivering capital works in a technical, field-based environment.

The successful candidate will ideally bring:

a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Project Management, and/or relevant work experience

7-10 years experience managing medium-sized projects

proven experience managing capital projects or construction works, with exposure to infrastructure upgrades, renewal works, pumps, piping, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering

strong knowledge of project management principles, methodologies and tools

excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to run multiple projects simultaneously

strong leadership abilities and the capability to work effectively across cross-functional teams

excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate complex ideas for diverse stakeholders

sound decision-making and problem-solving skills

proficiency with project management software and the Microsoft Office Suite

knowledge of relevant regulations, codes and standards related to capital projects.

PMP certification, previous water/utilities industry experience, exposure to SCADA systems and trade experience will all be highly regarded.

This is an opportunity to play a hands-on role in delivering the infrastructure that keeps Mount Isa's essential water services running. You'll coordinate directly with engineers, contractors and internal stakeholders on projects that have a visible, lasting impact on the community, in a fast-paced role with genuine ownership over delivery from planning through to commissioning.
