Gamuda Australia seeks a commercial, pragmatic Project Lawyer to join the Parramatta ISD team on-site in Parramatta, providing real-time legal and commercial counsel to the Project Director and site delivery teams under the Sydney Metro head contract. Focus areas include contract interpretation, risk management, subcontracts, variation claims, SOPA compliance, and client interfaces.

You will draft and negotiate major agreements and advise on EOTs and payment claims, influencing site decisions

Qualifications

• 10+ years PQE in construction, engineering, or infrastructure law.
• Experience on major civil, rail, tunnelling or station projects under D&C or Alliance models.
• Strong knowledge of Australian construction law, standard form contracts, and SOPA regimes.
• Ability to provide practical, solution-focused advice and influence project stakeholders.

Responsibilities

• Deliver real-time legal counsel on contract interpretation, risk allocation, and statutory compliance under the head contract.
• Draft, review and negotiate subcontracts, consultancy agreements, and major supply contracts.
• Advise on variation claims, EOTs, head contract notices, and SOPA payment claims.
• Proactively manage operational risks and resolve subcontractor and supplier issues.
• Support commercial teams in managing contract administration interfaces with Sydney Metro, TfNSW and partners.
• Maintain site governance with project regs and risk frameworks.

Gamuda Engineering is a global engineering and construction leader specialising in major Transport, Civil, and Energy Infrastructure projects. In Australia, our footprint is expanding through key Sydney Metro packages - including the Western Tunnelling Package and Stations Package West (SPW) - alongside major joint ventures like the Coffs Harbour Bypass and M1 Extension.

About the Role

We are seeking a commercial, pragmatic Project Lawyer to join our team on the Parramatta ISD project. Based on-site in Parramatta, you will provide real-time legal and commercial counsel to the Project Director and site delivery teams. This operational role focuses on live contractual risk management, high-value subcontracts, variation claims, SOPA compliance, and client interfaces under the Sydney Metro head contract.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver real-time counsel on contract interpretation, risk allocation, and statutory compliance under the head contract.
• Draft, review, and negotiate subcontracts, consultancy agreements, and major supply contracts aligned with head contract terms.
• Advise on variation claims, EOTs, head contract notices, and Security of Payment Act (SOPA) payment claims.
• Proactively manage operational risks and resolve subcontractor and supplier issues early to avoid formal disputes.
• Support commercial teams in managing contract administration interfaces with Sydney Metro, Transport for NSW, and utility partners.
• Maintain site compliance with project governance protocols, statutory regulations, and corporate risk frameworks.

Skills and Experience

• Degree in Law (LL.B or JD) with a current NSW Practising Certificate.
• Minimum 10 years’ PQE in construction, engineering, or infrastructure law (private practice or in-house contractor).
• Experience on major civil, rail, tunnelling, or station projects under D&C or Alliance models (Sydney Metro or TfNSW exposure highly regarded).
• Strong working knowledge of Australian construction law, standard form contracts, and SOPA regimes.
• Practical, solution-focused advice with the confidence to influence site engineers, commercial managers, and external stakeholders.
