Job summary

Hyundai Rotem Company in Australia is seeking a Production Engineer to develop and maintain standard production processes for rollingstock carbody assemblies. You will collaborate with local and overseas teams to optimize production plans, lead ToT transitions, and ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.

Reporting to the Production Engineering Manager, you will drive continuous improvement, support VIP readiness, and provide technical change-management input across the production

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering or Mechanical Engineering.
• 5 years’ experience in stainless steel rollingstock carbody production engineering.
• Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel.
• Demonstrable experience in welding & assembly practices.
• CAD proficiency with Catia and/or AutoCAD.
• Knowledge of EN15085 and AS/NZ 3834 is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Work with engineering, production and safety teams to ensure build process instructions are developed, implemented and maintained.
• Apply lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement to optimise outcomes; debug design/build methodology; validate methods, tooling, equipment and processes.
• Be responsible for process and operational safety for Carbody manufacturing stations.
• Provide initial response to production-related issues to ensure continuity of production.
• Collaborate with methods and production control teams to ensure information is up-to-date and accessible on time.
• Balance the production line with resources and skill requirements using Value Stream Analysis, Yamazumi charts or similar tools.
• Lead comprehensive Validation of Industrialisation Process (VIP) readiness to achieve series production.
• Provide the production control team with technical aspects of the change management process.
• Provide technical support for other rollingstock assemblies as needed.

Job description

Hyundai Rotem Company (HRC) was founded in 1977 and since that time, has been leading the industry globally by delivering critical national infrastructure in over 50 countries. A leader in the Korean rail industry, HRC has succeded in developing high-speed trains and is now establishing their presence in the Australian market.

Currently, the Australian operation of HRC is working on two major projects:

• The New Intercity Fleet (NIF) Project - a joint venture between HRC, UGL and MEA, this project is delivering a fleet of new intercity trains for operation in the NSW electrified rail network. The fleet comprises of 55 Long Units and 70 Short Units for the Newcastle, Blue Mountains, South Coast and Central Coast Lines; and
• The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) - a project commissioning, designing and constructing a new manufacturing facility in Torbanlea Qld and a new maintenance facility in Ormeau Qld. It includes manufacturing and delivering 65 EMU Train sets (390 cars) by the end of 2031.

Combined local and international design teams and suppliers will work together to ensure the delivery of manufacturing requirements and associated documentation to ensure that train sets locally manufactured in Australia meet the design, compliance, manufactuability, reliability, maintainability and safety specifications for the trains operational life for a minimum of at least 35 years.

1. PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) is a multibillion dollar project to manufacture and deliver 65 trains by the end 2031. The project includes the design, construction and commissioning of a new manufacturing facility in Torbanlea, a new maintenance facility in Ormeau and 65 train sets (390 cars).

The new train sets will be fully manufactured and tested at Torbanlea Manufacturing Facility. The state of art train design - incorporating class-leading safety, communications, security, accessibility, amenity and comfort for passengers and rail operational staff - will meet all specifications and contemporary design standards. A combined local and overseas team will be in work in cooperation with Fraser Coast businesses and Queensland rolling stock equipment suppliers to deliver this remarkable project.

2. ROLE OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Production Engineering Manager, the Production Engineer develops, implements and maintains standard production processes to achieve efficient and effective series production of Rollingstock Carbody assemblies.

The Production Engineer is required to collaborate closely with the site-based production team, our joint-venture partner and overseas engineering design teams to ensure production plans and activities are optimized, risks mitigated and opportunities realised.

The role requires the incumbent to assist in leading the Transfer of Technology (ToT) phase of the project, transitioning through to steady-state production. This requires effective communication with multiple stakeholders, and the application of a meticulous can-do attitude to ensure compliance with technical, safety and quality standards.

3. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES and ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Work with engineering, production and safety teams to ensure build process instructions are developed, implemented and maintained.
• Application of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement to optimise business outcomes. This includes the debugging of the design / build methodology and the validation of methods, tooling, equipment and processes.
• Responsible for the process and operational safety for Carbody manufacturing stations.
• Provide initial response to production-related issues to ensure continuity of production activities.
• Collaborate closely with methods and production control teams to ensure that technical information is up-to-date, complete and available on time.
• Support the production engineering function to balance the production line with resources and skills requirements using Value Stream Analysis, Yamazumi charts or similar tools.
• Liaise with other functions to lead a comprehensive Validation of Industrialisation Process (VIP) readiness to achieve series production.
• Provide the production control team with technical aspects of the change management process.
• Provide technical support on an as required basis for other fabricated Rollingstock assemblies, such as sub-assembly components and bogies.

4. DESIRED SKILLS and EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s Degree (or similar) in Industrial Engineering / Mechanical Engineering.
• 5 years’ experience in stainless steel rollingstock carbody (or similar) production engineering.
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft software such as Power point, Excel, etc.
• Demonstrable experience in contemporary welding & assembly practices.
• Demonstrable experience in welding jigs and fixtures usage and optimization.
• A good understanding of Rollingstock manufacture / production processes is highly desirable.
• IWE certification is highly desirable
• Proficient in the use of CAD software such as Catia and/or AutoCAD.
• A strong working knowledge of EN15085 and AS/NZ 3834.
• Strong planning skills to manage multiple complex tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent oral and communication skills.
• Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team and independently to organise and prioritise demands.
