Job summary

Westpac is seeking a Principal Engineer (Full Stack – Java) for the Gold Coast with hands-on leadership across architecture, engineering practices and delivery of secure, scalable customer communications. The role focuses on building integrations across channels, APIs and event-driven patterns, while guiding teams from architecture to production.

You will mentor senior engineers, partner with Product, Data, Cyber and Architecture teams, and explore AI/automation to enhance engineering

Qualifications

Hands-on Java, Spring Boot, and TypeScript experience is required.
Experience building large-scale distributed enterprise platforms.
Strong knowledge of event-driven and API-first architectures.
Cloud/platform engineering experience with containers, CI/CD, and IaC.
Experience designing Agentic AI and intelligent automation.
Strong observability, reliability and incident management expertise.
Proven technical leadership across multiple teams with hands-on coding review.

Responsibilities

Provide hands-on technical leadership guiding architecture from design to production.
Design reusable APIs and event patterns, platform services and automation.
Modernise the communication ecosystem and strengthen security, privacy and governance.

Why On-site?This role involves working closely with teams and stakeholders, with regular face-to-face meetings and collaboration, making an in-office presence important.

What’s the role?

As a Principal Engineer, you’ll provide hands-on technical leadership for Communication Intelligence, shaping the architecture, engineering practices and capabilities that support timely, secure and reliable customer communications across multiple channels. You’ll work across customer engagement platforms, data, decisioning, integrations and operational services, guiding teams from architecture through to production.

Additionally, you’ll design reusable APIs, event patterns, platform services and automation, while improving scalability, observability, resilience and traceability. You’ll help modernise the communication ecosystem, reduce reliance on legacy platforms and strengthen security, privacy, consent and governance across the communication lifecycle.

You will lead key technical decisions, drive engineering standards and support major incident resolution. You’ll also mentor senior engineers, partner with Product, Data, Cyber, Risk and Architecture teams, and explore AI and automation opportunities to improve engineering productivity, operational efficiency and customer communication delivery.

What do I need?

Strong full-stack engineering experience, with hands-on expertise in Java, Spring Boot and TypeScript are essential.
Deep experience designing and building large-scale, distributed enterprise platforms supporting high-volume, business-critical services.
Strong knowledge of event-driven and API-first architectures, including streaming, asynchronous processing, integrations and failure handling.
Experience with cloud and platform engineering, including containerised workloads, CI/CD, infrastructure as code and automation.
Experience designing and implementing Agentic AI and intelligent automation, including AI agents and automated workflows in enterprise environments.
Strong understanding of observability, reliability and resilience, including monitoring, performance, incident management and disaster recovery.
Proven technical leadership across multiple engineering teams, with the ability to remain hands-on, review code, influence architecture and mentor senior engineers.
