Job summary

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) in NSW is seeking a Principal Energy Analyst to lead the design and implementation of energy market models and BI capabilities. You will work with analysts to provide evidence-based advice to support policy and strategic planning.

Based in Parramatta with hybrid work, the role focuses on forecasting supply, demand, emissions and energy prices across the National Electricity Market and east coast gas systems.

Qualifications

• Qualifications or experience in engineering, mathematics, statistics, or related discipline.
• Proven knowledge of electricity markets and the National Electricity Market.
• Experience with wholesale electricity market forecasting tools (such as PLEXOS).
• Experience with data languages and systems such as Python, MATLAB, SQL.

• Ongoing, Full-time (35 hours per week) opportunity
• Located in Parramatta with hybrid working supported
• Salary relative to experience, and ranges from $154,231 up to $178,369 pa plus super

As a Principal Energy Analyst, you will lead the design, development and implementation of sophisticated energy market models and business intelligence capabilities. Working with a team of analysts and subject matter experts, you will develop integrated views of future energy market outcomes and provide evidence-based advice to support policy development, strategic planning and executive decision-making.

You will analyse complex market trends, assess emerging risks and opportunities, and provide insights into the impacts of policy reforms, technology changes and market developments across the National Electricity Market and east coast gas systems.

In this role, you will:

• Lead the development and application of energy market models to forecast supply, demand, emissions and energy prices.
• Provide strategic analytical advice to support policy development, regulation and long-term planning.
• Oversee the procurement, maintenance and governance of modelling tools, datasets and forecasting assumptions.

Essential Requirements

• Qualifications or relevant experience in engineering, mathematics, statistics or another related discipline.
• Proven experience and knowledge of electricity markets and a deep understanding of the National Electricity Market,
• Proven experience in the development and use of wholesale electricity market forecasting tools (such as PLEXOS).
• Extensive experience with complicated data model languages and systems such as python, mat-lab, SQL etc.
