Job summary

University of Sydney invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Electrochemical Engineering in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. The role focuses on electrochemical reactors and their supporting systems, combining hands-on experimentation with device and process engineering.

You will work on electrolysers or fuel cells, design devices with CAD, conduct performance and durability testing, and contribute to scale-up and integration, with a collaborative team

Qualifications

• PhD (or near completion) in Chemical Engineering, Electrochemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry or related field.
• Hands-on experience with electrolysers or fuel cells, including device assembly and testing.
• Ability to design electrochemical devices using CAD with appropriate materials selection.
• Experience in chemical process design: balances, PFDs, piping/ instrumentation diagrams.
• Strong understanding of electrochemical performance and transport processes.
• Ability to plan, execute and document experimental research independently.
• Strong written and verbal communication, with relevant outputs (papers, prototypes, patents).
• Ability to work collaboratively and maintain safe, compliant lab practices.

Responsibilities

• Design, assemble and improve electrochemical cells and reactor prototypes.
• Develop and operate experimental test systems integrating devices with fluid handling and data acquisition.
• Plan electrochemical experiments to evaluate performance, identify limitations and improve designs.
• Apply process engineering principles to develop configurations and diagrams.
• Support scale-up and integration with attention to flow, heat and mass transfer, sealing and reproducibility.
• Translate concepts into CAD models and manufacturing drawings; coordinate fabrication.
• Analyze data, keep reproducible records and prepare technical reports and publications.
• Collaborate with researchers and support student training, safety and IP considerations.
