Job summary

ARTC, Australia’s national rail network owner, is seeking a Plant Services Engineer to provide engineering and technical support across plant and equipment fleet. You will work with operational teams, travel monthly to metropolitan, regional and remote sites, and help ensure safety, reliability and performance. Bring mechanical engineering experience and a practical, solutions-focused mindset to influence asset lifecycle and compliance.

Qualifications

• Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• Experience with plant, machinery, rolling stock or heavy assets.
• Structured, analytical troubleshooting and problem solving.
• Strong attention to detail and management of engineering records.
• Knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements for plant equipment.
• Experience reviewing engineering designs, calculations or modifications.

About The Team

Our Operations team works with a diverse customer base to support several nationally significant supply chains. With management responsibility spanning across five states, our 8,500km rail network is used to transport bulk products, passenger and general freight, including steel and a vast array of consumer items such as groceries, electrical goods and other items for both import and export markets.

The Operations teams work within several complex and challenging environments, including some of the busiest rail corridors in Australia to deliver safe, efficient and sustainable service delivery outcomes for its customers, stakeholders and the community.

About The Opportunity

We are seeking a Plant Services Engineer to provide engineering and technical support across our existing and future plant and equipment fleet encompassing rail bound plant, road rail equipment and general construction plant.

This role will support the full asset lifecycle, from equipment specification and procurement through to commissioning, performance testing, modification, defect investigation and ongoing asset management. You will work closely with operational teams and key stakeholders to ensure plant and equipment remains safe, compliant, reliable and fit for purpose.

You will have the opportunity to identify new technologies and innovative equipment solutions that improve safety, productivity, mechanisation and whole-of-life asset performance.

Bring your mechanical engineering and freight or infrastructure maintenance rolling stock experience to a role where you can directly influence the safety, reliability and performance of critical plant and equipment across a national network.

This role includes regular travel (at least monthly), to support operational and project requirements which varies from time to time and across metropolitan, regional and remote areas.

Key Responsibilities Will Include

• Providing engineering oversight and configuration management for new and existing plant and equipment, including regulated plant assets.
• Identifying and evaluating new machinery, technology and equipment solutions to improve safety, productivity and operational efficiency.
• Developing and improving plant engineering processes, standards, guidelines and documentation. Investigating plant and equipment incidents and failures to identify root causes and recommend appropriate engineering solutions.
• Coordinating operational performance testing, commissioning and network interface testing for new and modified plant and rolling stock.
• Reviewing engineering reports, calculations, drawings and equipment designs from concept through to introduction into service.
• Developing and implementing engineered solutions to resolve plant and equipment issues through effective change management processes.
• Maintaining accurate engineering, testing, inspection and compliance records in accordance with regulatory and organisational requirements.
• Supporting broader projects and continuous improvement initiatives across plant and operational services.

You will be a practical and solutions-focused engineer who enjoys working across both technical engineering and operational environments.

We Are Looking For Someone With

• Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• Experience working with plant, machinery, heavy equipment, rolling stock or similar mechanical assets.
• A structured and analytical approach to troubleshooting, investigation and problem solving.
• Strong attention to detail with the ability to manage technical documentation and engineering records.
• Working knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements relating to plant and equipment.
• Experience reviewing engineering designs, specifications, calculations or equipment modifications.
• The ability to develop and implement engineering change and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work effectively with operational and technical teams.
