Job summary

HealthWISE in Queensland is seeking a compassionate Peer Worker to support individuals on their recovery journey, drawing on your lived experience with mental health challenges to empower positive change. You will provide recovery-oriented, trauma-informed support, develop plans with clients, and work with clinicians and community services to deliver non-clinical care.

Some travel and after-hours work may be required.

Qualifications

• Must have a diploma or Certificate IV in Mental Health or equivalent.
• Evidence of Mandatory Child Safety Training.
• Experience delivering strengths-based, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed support.

Responsibilities

• Provide peer support to individuals in recovery, informed by lived experience.
• Develop recovery-oriented plans and deliver evidence-based interventions.
• Collaborate with clinicians, carers and community services to provide non-clinical support.
• Conduct risk assessments and safety planning as needed.
• Utilize digital tools to offer telehealth and virtual care when appropriate.

Drawing on your lived experience of recovery or supporting someone close to you through mental health challenges, you will provide meaningful peer support that empowers individuals with complex mental health needs to achieve their recovery goals and enhance their wellbeing.

Your key responsibilities

• Provide support to individuals impacted by trauma, informed by your own lived experience of recovery.
• Develop recovery-oriented plans and deliver evidence-based interventions for those experiencing mental health distress, including victims of domestic, family, and sexual violence.
• Collaborate with clinicians, carers, and community services to deliver non-clinical, community-focused support.
• Conduct risk assessments and safety planning as needed.
• Use digital tools to offer virtual care services via telehealth where appropriate.

What you’ll bring to the role

• Diploma or Certificate IV in Mental Health or equivalent qualification.
• Evidence of Mandatory Child Safety Training
• Experience in strengths-based, recovery-oriented support and trauma-informed care.
• Ability to connect with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and lived experiences.
• Organisational and communication skills to deliver both one-on-one and group-based support effectively.
• Flexibility to travel and work after hours when required.
• Confidence in using Microsoft Office tools and digital health platforms.
• Understanding of stigma and discrimination and its impact on mental health recovery.
• Knowledge and skills in supporting people experiencing suicidal ideation and responding appropriately to suicide risk.
• Knowledge of mental health legislation and the primary healthcare landscape.
