Job summary

IMPACT Community Services Limited is seeking a part-time Peer Support Worker to provide group-based support for adults with severe mental illness across Wide Bay, Fraser Coast and North Burnett regions. You will work 27.5 hours per week, collaborating with Mental Health Services to deliver recovery-focused activities.

Applicants should have a Cert IV in Mental Health (or be willing to obtain within 6 months), plus lived experience of mental illness and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

• Minimum Cert IV or willingness to undertake within first 6 months in Mental Health, Peer work, Community Services or related health field.
• Lived experience of mental illness and willingness to share to build trust and support recovery.
• Strong understanding of recovery-oriented, strengths-based practice and participant-focused service delivery.
• Knowledge of National Standards for Mental Health Services and Human Services Quality Standards.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with diverse groups.
• Experience facilitating educational or practical workshops.
• Willingness to travel extensively throughout the Wide Bay region to deliver programs.

About the role

The Peer Support Worker is afixed term until 30/06/2027role (27.5hrs a week). This role is responsible for providing support to individuals aged 18 years old and over experiencing a severe mental illness (either episodic or persistent) who are accessing, or have within the last three months accessed, mental health clinical care through a Hospital and Health Service (HHS), and who are referred by the HHS. This support is delivered via group activities across the Wide Bay, Fraser Coast and North Burnett regions (HHS catchment area).

Key responsibilities

• Provide group-based peer support to participants who are case managed by Queensland Health Mental Health Services.
• Share lived experience of mental illness and recovery to support participants in their recovery journey and inspire hope.
• Develop and facilitate recovery-focused group activities that are innovative, participant-driven, and based on individual interests.
• Create Individual Recovery Plans in collaboration with Mental Health Case Managers to support participant goals and engagement in activities.
• Connect participants with peer support and community groups to strengthen social inclusion and ongoing recovery supports.
• Build and maintain strong partnerships with Hospital and Health Services, community organisations, and other service providers.
• Maintain accurate participant records and daily data entry in Supportability and Departmental databases, ensuring compliance and accountability.
• Ensure compliance with program guidelines, legislation, and standards, including the Mental Health Act, National Standards for Mental Health Services, workplace health and safety, and Child Protection Laws.

About you

• Minimum Cert IV or willingness to undertake and commitment to completion within first 6 months, in a relevant field such as Mental Health, Peer work, Community Services or other related health field.
• Lived experience of mental illness and willingness to appropriately share that experience to build trust, encourage hope, and support participant recovery.
• Strong understanding of recovery-oriented, strengths-based practice and participant-focused service delivery.
• Knowledge of the recovery process, National Standards for Mental Health Services, and Human Services Quality Standards.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
• Experience in group facilitation, including supporting and leading peer support groups and activities.
• Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and provide regular reporting while working remotely and across multiple locations.
• Strong administrative and computer skills, including Microsoft Office proficiency and maintaining accurate, confidential participant records.
• Established relationships with local mental health and community service providers.
• Experience facilitating educational or practical workshops.
• Willingness to travel extensively throughout the Wide Bay region to deliver programs.
