Job summary

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry invites applications for Paralegal positions within the Legal Division in Canberra. These ongoing and non-ongoing opportunities offer diverse work across biosecurity, agricultural production, trade, food, wine, fisheries and forestry.

You will provide administrative and paralegal support to the Legal Division, contribute to budgeting, reporting, and liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure legislative processes run smoothly.

Qualifications

• Experience in a legal practice environment.
• Experience providing administrative support.
• Familiarity with managing and tracking legal expenditure.
• Understanding of Commonwealth legal procurement processes.
• Competency using and navigating legal matter management systems.
• Experience with Microsoft products including Excel, PowerPoint, Visio and Teams.
• Experience, exposure or knowledge of legislative processes and reading/understanding legislation.

Responsibilities

• Support Chief Counsel, General Counsels and Principal Legal Officers to facilitate business efficiency.
• Assist with forecasting, budget management and financial performance.
• Prepare reports and documents for the Executive and lawyers in the division.
• Track legal expenditure and manage legal expenditure invoices and other expenses across the division.
• Liaise with external legal providers and assist with outsourcing of legal matters.
• Assist with onboarding of new staff, contractors and legal secondees and with Continuing Legal Education.
• Triaging a legal help desk and providing ad hoc paralegal tasks to support the work of the legal branches.
• Provide administrative support to the Legislation Coordination Section and related processes.
