Organiser - Far North Coast - Ballina / Lismore

United Workers Union

a new chapter. a renewed focus. join us

United Workers Union is entering an exciting new chapter.

With new leadership comes renewed purpose, fresh energy and a clear ambition: to build the strongest organising union in Australia that wins for workers.

We are looking for a passionate, driven and values-based Organiser, with experience in enterprise bargaining, who wants to be part of shaping the future of one of Australia’s largest and most influential unions. This role is full-time based in the Far North Coast (Ballina/Lismore) Region.

If you believe workers achieve more when they stand together, enjoy building relationships and thrive in campaigning environments, we’d love to hear from you.

about union workers’ union

We believe unions are strongest when members lead.

That’s why, United Workers Union is one of Australia’s largest [and fastest-growing] member-led unions, representing workers across a diverse range of industries that keep our communities running every day. Our members work in aged care; early education; hospitality; logistics; manufacturing; health; cleaning; diabslity support; warehousing; food production and many other sectors.

Every day we organise to improve the lives of working people and create lasting change.

We do this by pulling every lever to build worker power – growing membership, developing workplace leaders, supporting delegates, organising collective action and campaigning for better wages, safer workplaces and fairer communities, including campaigning both politically and in the community.

As we move into our next chapter, we are investing in growing our organising capability, developing our people and strengthening member-led campaigns across the country.

the opportunity

As an Organiser, you will work alongside members to build workplace power and deliver meaningful outcomes. This role is about far more than resolving workplace issues. It is about empowering members to lead, building sustainable workplace strength and helping shape the future of our Union.

The role also involves enterprise bargaining and industrial relations work, including supporting members through bargaining, workplace negotiations and industrial issues.

Your success will be measured by the strength of the workplaces you help build, the leaders you develop and the confidence you inspire in workers to stand together.

Your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Build strong relationships with workers.
  • Organise and recruit new members to the Union.
  • Identify and develop workplace delegates.
  • Build active and sustainable organising structures that grow the strength and influence of UWU across your areas of responsibility.
  • Support and represent members in enterprise barganining and workplace negotiations.
  • Develop and implement organising plans that grow membership, strengthen workplace leadership and increase member participation.
  • Promote and uphold the Union’s values of equity, diversity and inclusion in all aspects of your work.

We are looking for people who are passionate about and committed to improving the lives of the members we represent and have experience in enterprise bargaining.

You are someone who:

  • Believes deeply in the power of collective action.
  • Can build trust quickly with all workers including workers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Has a genuine commitment to the values and purpose of UWU.
  • Enjoys working in fast-paced and changing environments.
  • Has good communication skills, including the ability to motivate, develop and inspire others to take action.
  • Has experience in industrial relations and enterprise bargaining.
  • Has strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to achieve outcomes in a dynamic environment.
  • Has an interest in campaigning, organising and advancing social and industrial justice.
  • Shows initiative, resilience and has the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Previous experience in union organising, campaigning, community organising or advocacy will be highly regarded, but we are equally interested in people with transferable leadership skills and a passion for social justice.

To perform this job, you will also be required to have or obtain and maintain:

  • A valid driver’s licence; and
  • Right of Entry Permits.

Applicants must have the legal right to work in Australia and will be required to provide evidence of their work rights as part of the recruitment process.
