Job description

OPERATOR MAINTAINER

Full Time - Central and North-East Tasmania

About Us

Tasmanian Irrigation is a State-owned Company that develops, owns and operates irrigation schemes in Tasmania, in accordance with sound commercial practice. Our mission is to deliver water where and when it is needed to support sustainable agricultural growth in Tasmania.

We own and operate 19 irrigation schemes across the state, and we have $1.3 billion of new irrigation projects in development. We deliver water to our customers at the lowest sustainable price, while responsibly and sustainably managing our water resources, scheme assets and the environment.

Tasmanian Irrigation has the capacity to deliver 156,000 megalitres of high surety water each year, irrigating more than 133,000 hectares of land. For every 1,000 megalitres of water delivered, there is up to $3 million in on-farm investment, up to $7 million in annual economic uplift, and up to 30 direct and indirect jobs created.

All schemes developed and operated by Tasmanian Irrigation are economically viable, environmentally sustainable, have strong community endorsement, are designed to last at least 100 years and deliver water at an average reliability of more than 95 per cent per annum.

About The Role

Tasmanian Irrigation is searching for an Operator Maintainer to join our Water Delivery and Asset Performance team. This practical, hands-on role helps ensure reliable water delivery to irrigators across Central and North-East Tasmania.

Working across pumps, valves, dams, pipelines and associated infrastructure, you will operate, monitor and maintain irrigation assets, while demonstrating a strong commitment to safety, risk management and environmental stewardship. You will respond to operational issues and support the reliable delivery of water to customers across Central and North-East Tasmania. The role involves regular travel across our operational regions and occasionally to other Tasmanian irrigation schemes as required. It is ideally suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors, travelling to diverse locations, solving practical problems and taking ownership of outcomes.

You may already have experience in irrigation or water operations, or bring transferable skills from agriculture, utilities, construction, mechanical maintenance, electrical trades, local government, mining, manufacturing, defence, transport or another operational environment.

What You'll Need To Succeed
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety by identifying hazards, managing risks and contributing to a culture where people look after themselves and each other.
  • Identify, assess and manage operational risks associated with dams, pipelines, pump stations and remote work activities.
  • Ensure operational activities are undertaken in accordance with environmental obligations and stewardship objectives.
  • Operate and monitor pumps, valves, dams, pipelines and associated irrigation infrastructure.
  • Perform preventative and routine maintenance, inspections and fault identification.
  • Monitor scheme performance, environmental conditions and water delivery systems.
  • Build positive relationships with irrigators, contractors, regulators and colleagues.
  • Maintain accurate operational, compliance and asset records.
  • Work independently, manage priorities and make sound day-to-day operational decisions.
  • Contribute to emergency preparedness, safety, environmental management and continuous improvement.
To Be Successful, You Will Have
  • A strong commitment to safety, wellbeing, customer service and continuous improvement.
  • A current manual driver's licence and White Card.
  • Experience maintaining or operating infrastructure, plant, machinery or similar assets.
  • Strong practical problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience managing contractors and planning or scheduling work activities, with an understanding of safety, environmental and operational expectations.
  • Confidence working in remote outdoor environments and using basic computer and mobile technology.
  • A trade qualification in a relevant field (mechanical, electrical, , fabrication or similar) will be highly regarded but is not essential.
  • Qualifications or experience in water operations, confined space entry, working at heights, chemical handling, environmental monitoring, SCADA or irrigation, utilities, agriculture and infrastructure will be highly regarded.

If you do not meet every requirement but believe your skills and experience align with the role, we encourage you to apply.

What You'll Get In Return

You will have the opportunity to make a visible impact across Tasmania by helping deliver reliable water services that support farmers, regional communities and the State's agribusiness sector. You will be part of an organisation that values its people, supports development and promotes a positive, safe and inclusive culture.
