Job summary

Lake Macquarie City Council is seeking an Operational Works Assistant - Construction to join its City Construction team. You will contribute to construction and rehabilitation works, working outdoors in a collaborative crew and taking on hands-on tasks across roads, drainage, footpaths and foreshore areas.

This role emphasizes safety, reliability, and practical problem solving, with a 4-day work week and a chance to support essential community assets.

Qualifications

  • School certificate or relevant qualifications in Civil Construction or Conservation and Ecosystem Management civil works
  • Current SafeWork NSW General Construction Induction Card or equivalent recognised in NSW
  • Relevant industry experience civil works particularly road, drainage, foreshore improvement works or traffic facilities
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, perform duties reliably and enthusiastically, in a team or solo
  • Experience in the use of minor plant and equipment
  • Proven ability to work and communicate effectively in a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing high level customer service
  • Proven literacy and numeracy skills and ability to undertake workplace learning
  • Current class C driving license or license applicable to operational needs (e.g., LR)

Responsibilities

  • Hands-on civil construction work across roads, drainage, footpaths, foreshore improvements and traffic facilities
  • Support safe, reliable teamwork and positive safety practices on site
  • Operate trucks and plant, complete site documentation and respond to enquiries professionally
  • Contribute to projects that improve safety, accessibility and connectivity for Lake Macquarie residents

Multiple Permanent Positions - Full Time

As an Operational Works Assistant in our City Construction team, you'll contribute to the construction, and rehabilitation works within our community. LET’S EXPLORE THE JOB

In this role, you'll undertake a broad range of field-based construction tasks that support the delivery and improvement of assets used by our community every day. Working with allocated supervisors and crew members, you'll help construct and rehabilitate roads, drainage works, footpaths, foreshore areas, traffic facilities and other associated infrastructure.

Your day-to-day work may include operating trucks, small and large plant, using minor equipment, completing site documentation and responding professionally to enquiries. You'll bring a positive safety mindset, take responsibility for completing work to a high standard and contribute to environmentally responsible practices across different sites and project locations.

We're looking for reliable, safety-focused people who enjoy working outdoors and contributing to a productive crew environment. You'll be motivated, practical and willing to get in and support a range of construction tasks, whether working as part of a team or carrying out duties with minimal supervision.

You must also meet the following criteria:

  • School certificate or relevant qualifications in Civil Construction or Conservation and Ecosystem Management civil works
  • Demonstrated positive attitude towards safety in both compliance to Council's procedures and behaviours on the worksite
  • Current SafeWork NSW General Construction Induction Card or equivalent recognised in NSW
  • Relevant industry experience civil works particularly road, drainage, foreshore improvement works or traffic facilities
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated, perform duties in a reliable and enthusiastic manner, working as an individual and in a team environment
  • Experience in the use of minor plant and equipment
  • Proven ability to work and communicate effectively in a team environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing high level customer service
  • Proven literacy and numeracy skills and an ability to undertake workplace learning
  • Current class C drivers licence or driving licence applicable to the operational needs of the area e.g. LR
