Job summary

Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation is seeking a permanent OO5 Ranger for Pioneer Base Slade Point, Mackay. The role involves diverse field and office work, supervising a small team, developing the annual works program, and coordinating fire, pest management, infrastructure maintenance and visitor management.

You will live and travel to remote locations, work with First Nations partners, and ensure safety and wellbeing.

Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation – Slade Point QLD

A permanent OO5 Ranger position is available at Pioneer Base Slade Point, Mackay.

Undertake diverse field and office-based work. Assist the Ranger in charge to develop and implement the annual works program. Coordinate and manage a small team of rangers. Undertake work tasks focused predominantly on fire and pest management, plan and infrastructure maintenance. Help protect the natural environment, and plan for its future use. Work collaboratively with First Nations peoples to manage their spiritual lands.

This position assists the Ranger in Charge to develop and implement the annual works program within the Pioneer Work Unit, predominantly at Cape Hillsborough and Cape Palmerston National Park. Experience in staff supervision, leadership, workplace health and safety, natural resources management infrastructure development and maintenance, visitor management and compliance are key requirements of the role.

As a OO5 Ranger, you will report directly to and support the Ranger in Charge to plan and deliver the day‑to‑day work program in accordance with the business plan. You will lead and guide a small team, inspire enthusiasm, and ensure their safety and wellbeing.

Working collaboratively with other Rangers, First Nations partners, volunteers and external contractors, you will deliver annual fire, pest, natural resources, visitor and asset management programs and undertake plant and infrastructure maintenance tasks in protected areas. You must be willing and able to work well in a small and dynamic team.

You will need to be willing and able to live in, travel to, work and camp overnight in remote and isolated locations in varying climatic conditions. A reasonable degree of physical fitness is required.

• experience managing human resources and budget processes
• highly developed communications skills - to respond to client queries, provide advice and to carry out park patrols
• confidence undertaking compliance and enforcement activities
• ability to establish and maintain relationships with a variety of stakeholders including park neighbours and authority holders
• experience operating and maintaining plant and equipment (or the ability to rapidly acquire)
• a willingness to support and promote the interest of First Nations people.
