Job description

Occupational Therapist – Mental Health & Complex Disability

Specialised Support Services (WA)

Part-Time Employee | Work From Home + Community-Based | Opportunity to Grow to Full-Time

Perth, WA

Specialised Support Services (WA) is looking for an experienced Occupational Therapist to join our growing team.

But we aren't looking for just anyone.

We are looking for someone passionate about mental health who takes pride in exceptional clinical work and wants to become a valued, long-term member of a business built on trust and autonomy.

This is an opportunity to help us build the allied health arm of Specialised Support Services (WA) and have genuine input into what it becomes.

About Us

Specialised Support Services (WA) was built with a very clear purpose: to provide high-quality, person-centred support to people living with complex disabilities, with a particular passion for complex mental health, psychosocial disability, neurodiversity and neurological conditions.

We are a small, passionate and growing organisation built around trust and autonomy. Our team members manage their own workloads, build meaningful participant relationships and use their professional judgement without unnecessary micromanagement. In return, we expect accountability, high professional standards and genuine care for participant outcomes.

This business has been built from the ground up with an enormous amount of hard work, commitment and personal investment. As we expand into allied health, finding the right person is far more important to us than simply filling a position.

We want someone who will care about the reputation of Specialised Support Services (WA), take pride in being part of the team and hopefully grow with us for many years to come.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist to initially join us on a part-time permanent basis, with the opportunity to increase to full-time as your caseload develops.

This is predominantly a work-from-home and community-based position.

You will manage your own diary and appointments, completing participant consultations in their homes, in the community or via telehealth where clinically appropriate. Report writing and other administrative duties can be completed from home.

You will be trusted to independently manage your caseload, schedule your appointments and structure your working week in a way that enables you to provide high-quality services while meeting your professional responsibilities.

A laptop and work phone will be provided.

What You'll Be Doing

Your work will primarily involve supporting NDIS participants with complex support needs, particularly participants living with psychosocial disability, mental health conditions, neurodiversity and other complex disabilities.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • Completing comprehensive Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs).
  • Completing high-quality Home and Living assessments and reports.
  • Undertaking occupational therapy assessments and interventions.
  • Completing comprehensive clinical assessments in participants' homes and community environments.
  • Preparing robust, evidence-based reports that clearly articulate functional impairment, support needs, risks and recommendations.
  • Gathering and critically analysing information from participants, families, Support Coordinators and other treating professionals.
  • Translating complex clinical information into clear, defensible and practical recommendations.
  • Providing ongoing occupational therapy intervention where appropriate.
  • Participating in stakeholder meetings and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Managing your own caseload, appointments, follow-ups and report deadlines.
  • Developing meaningful therapeutic relationships while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Advocating for participant outcomes through high-quality clinical evidence and recommendations.
Report Writing Is a Major Part of This Position

We are looking for an OT who is exceptionally confident in assessment and report writing.

Our participants often have complex presentations, and their reports can significantly influence the supports they receive. We need someone who goes beyond templates and assessment scores: someone who can critically analyse evidence and clearly connect disability, functional impairment, risks, environment and recommended supports.

Your reports should be comprehensive, individualised, evidence-based, clinically defensible and of a consistently high professional standard.

Previous experience completing complex FCAs and Home and Living assessments within the NDIS environment is highly desirable and will be strongly regarded.

Who We're Looking For

You will ideally be an experienced Occupational Therapist with substantial experience working within mental health.

We are particularly interested in hearing from OTs who have worked with people experiencing complex psychosocial disability and who genuinely enjoy working with this participant group.

You must be comfortable working independently and able to manage your own caseload without constant oversight. Management will still be available whenever you need guidance or want another perspective. Our approach is based on trust rather than micromanagement.

To be successful, you will need:
  • A recognised qualification in Occupational Therapy.
  • Current AHPRA registration as an Occupational Therapist.
  • Significant professional experience, with strong experience in mental health and/or psychosocial disability.
  • Demonstrated experience completing comprehensive Functional Capacity Assessments.
  • Experience completing, or strong demonstrated competency in, Home and Living assessments.
  • Excellent clinical reasoning and assessment skills.
  • Exceptional written communication and report-writing ability.
  • A strong understanding of functional impairment and disability support needs.
  • Experience working within the NDIS environment.
  • Strong time-management and organisational skills.
  • The ability to independently manage a caseload and diary.
  • Confidence working in participants' homes and within the community.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build genuine rapport with participants and stakeholders.
  • A high level of professional integrity and accountability.
  • Current driver's licence and reliable vehicle.
  • Relevant NDIS worker screening and employment clearances.
Just as Important as Your Experience...

We are looking for the right personality and values fit.

You might be exactly who we're looking for if you:

Genuinely care about people.

You haven't become desensitised to the fact that behind every assessment and report is a real person whose life can be significantly affected by the quality of the work you produce.

Take pride in your work.

You don't submit something simply because it's "good enough". You want your clinical work and reports to represent the standard of practitioner you are.

Are passionate about mental health.

Working with complex psychosocial presentations isn't something you merely tolerate — it's an area you genuinely want to work in.

Value autonomy.

You enjoy being trusted to organise your own working day and make professional decisions.

Are accountable.

You understand that flexibility and freedom work because there is mutual trust. If you say you'll do something, we need to know it will be done.

Want somewhere to stay and grow.

We aren't looking for someone who simply wants another job for the next six months. We want someone who can see themselves becoming an important part of Specialised Support Services (WA) as the business continues to grow.

What We Offer

You'll receive:

  • Permanent part-time employment, with the opportunity to increase to full-time as your caseload grows.
  • A healthy and competitive salary package for the right person, recognising the experience, clinical expertise and high standard of work we are looking for.
  • Predominantly work-from-home and community-based working arrangements.
  • Significant autonomy over your diary and working week.
  • No unnecessary office attendance.
  • A company-provided laptop and work phone.
  • A supportive management structure without unnecessary micromanagement.
  • The freedom to use your professional judgement.
  • The opportunity to develop genuine long-term relationships with your participants.
  • The opportunity to play an important role in establishing and shaping our allied health services.
  • The opportunity to grow professionally as the business expands.
  • A workplace where quality of service and participant outcomes matter.
  • A small team where your contribution is genuinely noticed and valued.
This Isn't Just Another OT Position

For the right person, we want this to become much more than simply coming to work, seeing participants and going home.

You will be joining Specialised Support Services (WA) at an exciting stage of its development and will have the opportunity to help shape how our allied health services operate from the beginning.

We want someone who eventually looks at this service and feels: "I helped build that."

If you're an experienced Occupational Therapist who is passionate about mental health, produces exceptional clinical work, values autonomy and wants to find a business you can genuinely invest yourself in for the long term, we would love to hear from you.
