The Role

Turn the stories everyone is talking about into compelling journalism for one of Australia’s most recognised media brands.

From timely news and true crime to powerful real-life stories from the Australian heartland, New Idea is looking for a versatile News Editor who knows what will resonate with our audience and how to bring it to life across print, digital, social and video.

This is a hands-on role for a journalist who loves finding original angles, interviewing real people and owning stories from the initial pitch through to publication. You’ll create distinctive, audience-first content that keeps New Idea relevant, engaging and connected to the issues that matter to everyday Australians.

What you’ll be doing
  • Shape standout stories: Identify fresh angles across news, true crime, entertainment, television and real-life issues.
  • Own the editorial process: Commission, write and edit high-quality content while managing interviews, shoots, workflows, legal considerations and deadlines from beginning to end.
  • Bring stories to life across platforms: Adapt content for print, digital and social, including scripting, filming and editing video, conducting vox pops and creating engaging social content.
  • Build strong external relationships: Manage freelancers and contributors, negotiate fees, and work confidently with publicity teams, talent and real-life interview subjects.
  • Use insights to drive impact: Apply audience data, SEO principles and content-performance insights to strengthen storytelling and inform future ideas.
About you

We’re looking for someone who brings:

  • Strong editorial experience: At least four years’ journalism experience within a magazine, newspaper or digital publishing environment, including commissioning, writing and editing long-form and social media content.
  • Exceptional storytelling instincts: Sharp news sense, excellent interviewing skills and the ability to uncover original, audience-relevant angles across a broad range of subject areas.
  • Genuine multi-platform capability: A strong understanding of print, digital, social media, SEO and audience behaviour, with video filming or editing skills highly regarded.
  • Confidence and initiative: The willingness to get out from behind the desk whether that means attending an event, conducting a street vox pop, filming a reel or door-knocking for a story, while also knowing how to present themselves on screen and build a recognisable personal brand.
  • Strong relationship and delivery skills: The judgement, communication and organisation to work sensitively with real people, manage external stakeholders and deliver multiple stories accurately under pressure.
