Job summary

The University of Sydney invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Soil Security for Cotton Farming Systems. Based in Narrabri, NSW, you will contribute to a soil-security framework for cotton systems and lead regional soil assessments and GIS mapping efforts.

You will work with an interdisciplinary team, supervise students, and contribute to teaching and knowledge-exchange activities while delivering projects under CRDC governance.

Qualifications

• PhD awarded by commencement in soil science or closely related field.
• Experience in quantitative soil assessment and soil-landscape analysis.
• Experience designing or implementing soil field-sampling programs and handling laboratory data.
• Strong skills in GIS and spatial analysis.

Responsibilities

• Conduct research within Australian cotton farming systems and contribute to project plans and CRDC reporting.
• Develop regional baseline assessment using pedogenons, genosoils and phenosoils.
• Identify soil functions, ecosystem services and threats; develop indicators and scoring methods for Soil Security.
• Design and coordinate soil-sampling programs, including field logistics and QA/QC.
• Coordinate collection and laboratory characterization of soil properties.
• Review evidence and collaborate with growers, consultants and researchers to develop management responses.
• Engage with partners through workshops, field days and knowledge-exchange activities.
• Supervise and mentor undergraduate/ postgraduate students; contribute to teaching as appropriate.
