Job description

Camberwell Grammar School – Canterbury VIC

Camberwell Grammar School is an independent Anglican day school for boys from Pre-Preparatory to Year 12. We aim to give every student in our care the very best education in order to prepare them for life beyond school. We are a learning community, which encourages staff, students, past students and parents to involve themselves fully in all aspects of school life and to identify themselves with its values: Learning, Respect, Integrity, Courage and Optimism. We are proud of the warm spirit and sense of community that characterises our school family.

Our school campus is located in the leafy inner east suburb of Canterbury, on land originally inhabited by the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation, and blends period architecture with exciting contemporary design and state-of-the-art facilities.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a passionate and enthusiastic casual Music Assistant to join our Music Department, providing administrative and operational support to the Music School Administration team in a busy and engaging school environment.

This is a valuable opportunity to learn from an experienced Music administration team and develop practical and transferable skills in administration, scheduling, logistics and event support. The role will provide insight into the work that takes place behind the scenes of a busy school Music Department and valuable experience that can support future opportunities across performing arts administration, school administration, orchestral management, festival administration and other arts management related areas.

Working under the direction of the Music School Administration Manager and alongside the Music Administration Assistant, you will support the day-to-day administration of a comprehensive school music program. A key focus will be assisting with the administration and scheduling of approximately 700 weekly instrumental music lessons, alongside supporting room bookings, lesson changes, event logistics, concerts, performances, the Music Department's library and general administration.

This is a casual position of 22.5 hours per week, throughout both the school terms and school holiday periods. There is flexibility to work these hours across three full days or 4-5 part time days per week, with Monday and Friday being two of the days worked each week. It is envisaged that this role will be for a period of 12 months.

Ideally, the successful applicant will commence in mid-November 2026.

ABOUT YOU

You have a genuine interest in music and the performing arts and are keen to learn more about the work that happens behind the scenes. You will bring curiosity, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, along with strong attention to detail, and a reliable and professional approach to your work.

You will enjoy learning new things and be comfortable asking questions, taking guidance and putting what you have learned into practice. You enjoy working with people and will take pride in contributing to a busy team and providing friendly and professional support to students, parents and staff.

This is an opportunity to learn alongside people who are passionate about music and committed to sharing their knowledge and experience. Whether you are building on your studies, exploring where your interests might take you, or looking to develop practical experience in a new area, we are looking for someone who is ready to learn, contribute and make the most of the opportunity.

Previous experience in administration, music or a school environment is welcome but not essential.

  • Excellent organisational skills and a high level of attention to detail.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Initiative and eagerness to learn new systems, processes and information, with a willingness to put learning into practice.
  • Confidence to ask questions, seek guidance and learn from others.
  • Ability to manage routine tasks, prioritise competing demands and meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive and professional relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • A reliable, professional and collaborative approach, with the ability to work effectively as part of a busy administration team.
  • Confidence working with Microsoft Office applications and willingness to learn school-specific systems.
  • An interest in music and the performing arts.
Qualifications
  • Relevant qualifications, study or experience in music, arts, arts management, education or a related field are desirable but not essential.
  • Working with Children Check.
  • National Crime Check.
