Job summary

Downer is seeking a Methods & Optimisation Specialist to join our Rail and Transit Systems team in Cardiff. You will translate maintenance requirements into safe, efficient, technician-ready work instructions and standard work, collaborating across operations, engineering and planning to drive improvements on RTS fleets.

The role focuses on developing, validating and standardising maintenance methods, tracking KPIs, and ensuring tasks are trialled and embedded on the shop floor with safety,

Qualifications

• Trade, engineering, maintenance, asset management or equivalent qualification/experience.
• Experience in rolling stock maintenance, production engineering, methods engineering, maintenance optimisation or operational improvement.
• Experience developing, validating or improving maintenance work instructions, inspection tasks, exam sequences and standard work practices.
• Experience managing task change, trials, operational readiness, technician feedback loops and shop-floor implementation.
• Experience working across engineering, maintenance operations, planning, training, quality and safety functions.
• Experience using maintenance management systems, performance data, registers and reporting to support improvement decisions.

Job description

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Methods & Optimisation Specialist to join our Rail and Transit Systems team at our Cardiff site.

The Maintenance Methods & Optimisation Specialist is responsible for the development, validation, standardisation and continuous improvement of rolling stock maintenance methods across RTS fleets and projects.

The role translates maintenance requirements, overhaul procedures, inspection regimes and engineering changes into safe, efficient, technician-ready work instructions, task sequences, tooling requirements and standard work. Working across all functions including maintenance operations, engineering, planning, training, continuous improvement and site leadership, the role ensures new and changed maintenance tasks are trialled, operationally ready, embedded on the shop floor and measured for safety, quality, productivity, compliance and whole-of-life value.

Key Responsibilities:

• Improve maintenance work plans and schedules.

Education & Qualifications:

Trade, engineering, maintenance, asset management, continuous improvement or equivalent qualification/experience in a rolling stock or heavy maintenance environment.

Experience:

• Demonstrated experience in rolling stock maintenance, production engineering, methods engineering, maintenance optimisation or operational improvement.
• Experience developing, validating or improving maintenance work instructions, inspection tasks, exam sequences and standard work practices.
• Experience managing task change, trials, operational readiness, technician feedback loops and shop-floor implementation.
• Experience working across engineering, maintenance operations, planning, training, quality and safety functions.
• Experience using maintenance management systems, performance data, registers and reporting to support improvement decisions.

Skills & Knowledge:

• Strong understanding of rolling stock maintenance, TMP/maintenance task compliance, inspections, exams and work package delivery.
• Ability to define safe, practical and efficient task methods, tooling requirements, standard times, labour assumptions and trade competencies.
• Knowledge of change control, operational readiness, competency sign-off, training needs analysis and assurance requirements.
• Strong data analysis, facilitation, technical writing, stakeholder management and problem-solving skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant maintenance, reporting or continuous improvement systems.
