Job summary

The Office of The Hon Pat Conroy MP is seeking applications for a non-ongoing full-time Media & Communications Officer (EOA) based in Belmont, NSW. The contract runs for nine months with potential extension and/or ongoing employment following the backfilling arrangement.

The role supports the Parliamentarian's media and communications activities within Shortland and assists with constituent enquiries as required.

Qualifications

  • Qualifications in media, communications, politics, social sciences, or other relevant disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience drafting high-quality communications materials (media releases, newsletters, letters).
  • Experience developing and implementing communications strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver the Parliamentarian's communications to the electorate; publish newsletters, print collateral, and manage the website.
  • Prepare media releases and op-eds, attend media events, and build relationships with local media and stakeholders.
  • Work with the Digital Media Adviser to highlight community-facing opportunities across digital platforms.
  • Assist with constituent enquiries (in-person, phone, email); research solutions and liaise with Government agencies as needed.
  • Collaborate with Government departments or offices to resolve constituent matters in a timely manner.
  • Promote and maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Undertake other duties as directed to support the Parliamentarian and Electorate Office.

Job description

The office of The Hon Pat Conroy MP is seeking applications for a non-ongoing full-time (38 hours per week) Media & Communications Officer (EOA) based in the Parliamentarian’s Electorate Office in Belmont, NSW.

This contract is for an initial period of nine months, with the possibility for further extension and/or ongoing employment following this backfilling arrangement.

This key position in the Electorate Office will support the Parliamentarian's media and communications activities within Shortland and will include assisting with constituent enquiries.

Key responsibilities
  • Manage the end-to-end delivery of the Parliamentarian's communications to the electorate distributing digital newsletters, creating printed collateral and managing website.
  • Preparing media releases and op-eds, attending media events, and developing effective relationships with local media outlets and other key stakeholders.
  • Working with the Digital Media Adviser to ensure all community facing opportunities for the Parliamentarian are highlighted across digital platforms.
  • Contribute to constituent enquiries (in-person, phone and email), researching solutions and liaising with Government agencies and stakeholders as needed, to ensure matters are resolved in a timely and effective manner.
  • Work with the appropriate Government departments or other offices to ensure constituent matters are solved in a timely manner.
  • Promote, support and maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace culture.
  • Other duties as directed to support the Parliamentarian and the effective operation of the Electorate Office.
About you
  • Qualifications in media, communications, politics, social sciences, or other relevant disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience in drafting high-quality communications materials, including media releases, newsletters, letters and other print items.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and successfully implementing communications strategies.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain strong working relationships with local media and other key stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to accurately track, follow up and follow through with media and community enquiries.
  • Experience with digital marketing platforms such as MailChimp, Canva and Adobe programs.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, under time constraints and strict deadlines with minimum supervision.
  • Demonstrated professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
  • A respectful demeanuur when engaging with office staff and constituents.
  • Prior political experience is preferred but not essential, however an interest in and understanding of the local political environment is required.
  • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.
  • An additional allowance up to $9,605 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work.

  • An initial probationary period of three months may apply.
  • The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check.
  • Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act.
  • The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.
  • For staff employed by a Minister or Parliamentary Secretary either in a personal or electorate staff position, it is a condition of your employment that you obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance and comply with the Ministerial Staff Code of Conduct.
