Job summary

SLAM Orthopedic in Sydney is seeking a Mechanical R&D Engineer to own the mechanical architecture of our patented sensor system, ensuring micron-level alignment of mechanical and optical components. Qualifications

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
• 3–5+ years of experience in fine mechanics, scientific instruments, optics, or related.
• Experience with sensor technologies (strain gauges, photodiodes, imaging sensors, or optical rangefinders).
• Knowledge of interaction between mechanical parts and firmware/electronics (signal noise, calibration).
• Experience with design for manufacturing (DFM) and GD&T for plastics and metals.
• Experience with FEM analysis and general simulation is a plus.
• Experience transitioning from lab prototypes to low‑volume manufacturing or external suppliers is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Own the mechanical architecture of our sensor system, ensuring alignment of mechanical and optical components within microns.
• Collaborate with firmware and electronics engineers to link sensor performance to design.
• Investigate, simulate and resolve environmental effects (sterilization, handling, assembly).
• After design transfer, push technology further by exploring limits, failure modes and next‑generation opportunities.
• Build prototypes and test setups to validate assumptions early.
• Translate a working prototype into a stable, manufacturable and scalable design.
• Design and validate the mechanical assembly, controlling sealing, tolerances, surface quality, creep, torque and thermal behavior.
• Develop or support optical calibration and verification fixtures ensuring geometry and reference surfaces are reproducible.
