Job summary

Custom Denning is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the engineering team at our Sydney facility, supporting design, development and continuous improvement of bus platforms. This hands-on role combines CAD work with production-floor problem solving and cross-functional collaboration to deliver robust, Australian-made vehicles.

The ideal candidate has 3–5 years in mechanical design within manufacturing, strong CAD skills, and a hands-on approach to bring concepts from CAD to a finished vehicle

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• 3–5 years designing mechanical components for manufacturing environments.
• Strong CAD skills and ability to read/produce technical drawings to standards.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies and systems for buses/coaches, from concept through to production release
• Produce and review 3D CAD models, drawings and BOMs (SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo or similar)
• Support the production line with engineering input — troubleshooting build issues, running root-cause analysis and implementing corrective actions
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce build time, cost and rework across the manufacturing process
• Conduct engineering analysis (structural, thermal, fatigue) to validate designs against ADR and relevant Australian Design Standards
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation, work instructions and engineering change notices (ECNs)
• Liaise with suppliers, fabricators and trades to source components and resolve manufacturing/fit-up issues
• Support prototype builds, testing and validation of new models (including electric drivetrain integration)
• Collaborate with electrical, production and quality teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and compliant

THE OPPORTUNITY

We're looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team and support the design, development and continuous improvement of our bus and coach platforms. This is a hands-on role suited to someone who enjoys working close to the production floor, solving real manufacturing problems, and seeing their designs go from CAD to a finished vehicle. Experience in heavy vehicles, commercial vehicles, automotive or bus/coach manufacturing is highly regarded.

ABOUT YOU

You'll bring:

Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline)

3–5 years' experience in a mechanical design/engineering role within manufacturing — heavy vehicle, automotive, bus/coach, truck body building, rail or agricultural equipment backgrounds highly regarded

Strong 3D CAD skills and confidence reading/producing technical drawings to Australian Standards

Practical, hands-on approach — comfortable on the production floor, not just at a desk

Understanding of sheet metal fabrication, welding, chassis/structural design or vehicle systems (highly regarded)

Familiarity with ADRs (Australian Design Rules) or willingness to learn

Strong problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset

Good communicator, able to work cross-functionally with production, quality and suppliers
