Job summary

Orica’s GroundProbe team seeks a Mechanical Engineer to design and develop robust mechanical systems. You will create high-quality drawings and documentation, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to meet engineering standards and customer requirements.

You will support production and field operations, contribute to continuous improvement, and help advance IP and safety practices in a fast-paced environment. A Mechanical/Mechatronics degree and 4+ years of experience are required.

Qualifications

• A degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering.
• 4+ years in a commercial engineering environment.
• Experience in product design, prototyping, testing and verification of complex mechanical systems.
• Experience with a structured product development lifecycle and engineering framework.
• Knowledge of Australian design standards; pursuing RPEQ accreditation.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical solutions balancing performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and time-to-market.
• Create and maintain engineering deliverables including 3D models, assemblies, drawings, BOMs and manufacturing documentation using SolidWorks.
• Assemble prototype systems and coordinate product testing with suppliers and site teams.
• Provide Level 4 technical support to production, field operations and business teams.
• Develop technical documentation to support manufacturing, QA, testing, troubleshooting and maintenance.
• Identify and manage technical and safety risks and maintain engineering files per procedures.
• Contribute to IP protection and engineering process improvements.
• Maintain safety by following WHS policies and designing safe products.

About the role

We are seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering team, supporting the design, development, and continuous improvement of innovative GroundProbe products. In this role, you will work within multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality mechanical designs, technical documentation, and product solutions that meet engineering standards and customer requirements.

You will be involved in the design and integration of mechanical components and assemblies, development of engineering drawings and specifications, system testing and validation, and troubleshooting activities. You will also provide support to production and field operations while contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. Working under appropriate supervision, you will apply sound engineering principles and established processes to ensure robust, reliable, and compliant engineering outcomes across all project deliverables.

What you will be doing

• Design and develop mechanical solutions that balance product performance, reliability, manufacturability, cost, and time-to-market objectives.
• Create and maintain high-quality engineering deliverables, including 3D models, assemblies, technical drawings, Bills of Materials (BOMs), assembly instructions, and manufacturing documentation using SolidWorks and other engineering tools.
• Assemble prototype systems and coordinate product testing activities, working closely with suppliers and site teams to ensure timely verification and validation of designs.
• Support product development through troubleshooting, continuous improvement initiatives, and system-level testing to ensure products meet performance, usability, and reliability requirements.
• Develop clear technical documentation to support manufacturing, quality control, testing, troubleshooting, product maintenance, and training activities.
• Provide Level 4 technical support to production, field operations, and business teams, applying effective problem-solving techniques to resolve complex product issues.
• Identify, communicate, and manage technical and safety risks, ensuring engineering files and documentation are maintained in accordance with established product development procedures.
• Contribute to the development, protection, and continuous improvement of GroundProbe intellectual property and engineering processes.
• Champion workplace safety by following all WHS policies and procedures, proactively identifying hazards, and incorporating safe design principles into new and existing products.
• Maintain accurate administration records, including timesheets, project tracking, leave management, and other business systems in a timely manner.
• Regularly communicate project progress, challenges, and milestones to engineering leadership and key stakeholders.

What you will bring

• A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• Approximately 4+ years of experience in a commercial engineering environment.
• Hands-on experience in product design and development, including the design, prototyping, testing, and verification of complex mechanical systems or equipment.
• Experience working within a structured product development lifecycle and engineering framework.
• Knowledge of Australian design standards and engineering best practices, with a desire to work towards RPEQ accreditation.
• Experience designing mechanical components and assemblies, including supplier documentation, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and engineering drawing packages.
• Strong proficiency in SolidWorks, including 3D modelling, assemblies, and 2D technical drawings.
• Experience with sheet metal and welded assembly design.
• Knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulation and analysis.
• Demonstrated experience developing and executing test plans, validation activities, and engineering verification processes.
• Excellent technical writing, documentation, and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
• A keen eye for detail, strong critical thinking skills, and a practical problem-solving mindset.
• The ability to manage multiple priorities while delivering high-quality engineering outcomes in a fast-paced environment.
