Job summary

FWR is actively seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer in Brisbane, QLD, AU to join our engineering team. You will work hands-on on heavy transport equipment, focusing on designing trailers that are efficient to manufacture on the workshop floor and meet project objectives.

You will develop 3D models and fabrication drawings in SolidWorks, collaborate with production leaders, suppliers and management, and contribute to continuous improvement across engineering and manufacturing processes.

Qualifications

• Experience in trailer engineering and design.
• Mechanical engineering design experience in heavy transport equipment.
• High-level proficiency in SolidWorks.
• Experience using DraftSight and/or AutoCAD.
• Understanding of engineering principles, materials and manufacturing processes.
• Design for manufacture (DFM) understanding.

Responsibilities

• Managing available engineering man-hours and prioritising workloads across multiple projects.
• Developing concepts, 3D models and detailed fabrication drawings using SolidWorks.

Role Responsibilities

You will be responsible for:

• Managing available engineering man-hours and prioritising engineering workloads across multiple projects.
• Developing concepts, 3D models and detailed fabrication drawings using SolidWorks.
• Working closely with management and production leading hands to understand project requirements, manufacturing constraints and design objectives.
• Refining and developing existing trailer designs while assisting with the development and expansion of new product lines.
• Performing engineering calculations and simulations to validate designs and ensure structural integrity, feasibility and performance.
• Producing accurate manufacturing and fabrication drawings suitable for workshop production.
• Generating and maintaining engineering documentation including design specifications, BOMs, technical reports and supporting documentation.
• Working with external engineers, component manufacturers and suppliers to ensure project and compliance requirements are achieved.
• Supporting production with technical queries and resolving design or manufacturing issues.
• Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives across engineering, manufacturing efficiency, product quality and standardisation.

Selection Criteria

The successful applicant will ideally have:

• Strong previous experience in trailer engineering and design.
• Proven experience in mechanical engineering design, preferably within heavy transport equipment, trailers or a similar manufacturing environment.
• High-level proficiency in SolidWorks.
• Experience using DraftSight and/or AutoCAD.
• A strong understanding of engineering principles, structural design, materials and manufacturing processes.
• A strong understanding of design for manufacture (DFM), with the ability to develop designs that are practical and efficient to fabricate.
• Experience completing engineering calculations and validating designs.
• FEA experience is advantageous but not essential.
• Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate, high-quality engineering deliverables.
• The ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and effectively prioritise engineering tasks.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work directly with workshop personnel, management, suppliers and external engineering partners.
• Experience with Australian heavy vehicle regulations, trailer compliance, PBS and ROVER would be highly regarded.

We don't want someone who simply produces drawings. We are looking for an engineer who can understand the application, develop the concept, engineer the solution and work with production to turn it into a finished trailer.
