Job description

Tailored Engineering. Genuine Collaboration. Real Support.

At AW Maritime, we believe great engineering comes from working closely together – with each other and with our clients. Every project we deliver is technically rigorous and customised to its site, its users and its environment, and no one at AW Maritime solves those problems alone.

We're looking for a civil, structural or coastal engineer with 3–10 years' experience to join our Geelong team. You may already be working at a senior level, or you may be a talented, highly motivated engineer who is ready to take the next step. Either way, if you want to work on engineering solutions that are genuinely tailored to each project, we'd like to hear from you.

Collaboration sits at the centre of how we work – design reviews around the table, site visits together and working problems through as a team. For that reason, living locally and working from our Geelong office is important to us. We also support flexibility to work from home as part of your week.

About AW Maritime

AW Maritime is one of Australia's leading specialist maritime infrastructure design consultancies. We design highly functional port infrastructure and the complementary coastal infrastructure that supports it – wharves, berths, jetties, pontoons, breakwaters, rock revetments, seawalls and boat ramps – and provide the investigations, condition assessments and asset management advice that keep that infrastructure performing.

Our clients are locally based, state-wide across Victoria and throughout Australia. They include port authorities, local councils, state government agencies, contractors and private industry.

Unlike large multidisciplinary consultancies, maritime engineering isn't one of many services – it is our business. Our specialist focus allows us to provide practical, independent and technically accurate advice, backed by many years of experience delivering projects in the maritime environment. Our size is one of our greatest strengths: we make decisions quickly, work directly with our clients, support each other closely and give our people the opportunity to influence the direction of the company.

The Role

You’ll work on maritime infrastructure projects from concept and investigation through detailed design and construction support, for clients in Geelong, the Surf Coast and Great Ocean Road, across Victoria and nationally.

You’ll work alongside our Principals and Directors in a highly collaborative team, where design decisions are talked through, reviewed and refined together. Your level of responsibility will reflect your experience – for some, that means leading projects and client relationships; for others, it means building towards that with strong support around you.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and deliver maritime infrastructure projects – from highly functional port infrastructure (wharves, berths, jetties, pontoons, mooring and fendering) to complementary coastal infrastructure (breakwaters, rock revetments, seawalls and boat ramps).
  • Develop customised engineering solutions that respond to each site's metocean conditions, geotechnical constraints, operational requirements and design life.
  • Undertake civil, structural and coastal design and analysis of marine structures in accordance with relevant Australian Standards and maritime design guidelines, including AS 4997.
  • Prepare accurate, clear and constructible drawings, technical reports, specifications and design documentation.
  • Lead or contribute to site investigations, inspections and condition assessments of port and coastal assets.
  • Work closely with clients and stakeholders to understand how each piece of maritime infrastructure needs to function and perform.
  • Manage project scope, budgets, programmes and client expectations, with support from senior team members as required.
  • Develop and maintain strong, long-term client relationships and identify opportunities to add value to their port and coastal assets.
  • Contribute to proposals and help win new maritime infrastructure work.
  • Coordinate project teams, subconsultants and contractors through design and construction.
  • Share knowledge with, and support, graduate and developing engineers.
  • Maintain high standards of technical quality, safety and professionalism.
About You
  • Have a degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (a maritime or coastal background is welcome but not essential).
  • Have approximately 3–10 years' experience in consulting, design or infrastructure delivery.
  • Have experience in maritime, coastal, structural or heavy civil infrastructure – or a strong drive to build your career in maritime engineering.
  • Be Chartered (CPEng / NER) or working towards it.
  • Have strong technical foundations and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Enjoy collaborating, asking questions and working problems through with others.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build confidence with clients.
  • Live locally in the Geelong or Surf Coast region and be able to work regularly from our Geelong office.
  • Have a passion for the ocean, the coast and maritime infrastructure.
At AW Maritime you’ll enjoy:
  • A highly collaborative, supportive team where help is always close at hand.
  • Technically interesting, highly customised projects – no two are the same.
  • Direct access to, and mentoring from, our Principals and Directors.
  • The opportunity to grow your responsibility and technical expertise as your experience develops.
  • Flexibility, including working from home as part of your week.
  • Minimal bureaucracy.
  • Competitive remuneration.
  • The opportunity to influence company strategy and technical direction.
  • Projects locally, across Victoria and around Australia.
Why Join AW Maritime?

If you’re looking for a role where you can deliver technically excellent, highly customised engineering – surrounded by a team that genuinely supports you to succeed – we’d love to hear from you. Whether you’re an experienced senior engineer or a motivated engineer ready to step up, we’ll provide the platform and support to help you grow.

Join AW Maritime and help shape the future of maritime infrastructure – locally, across Victoria and around Australia.
