Job summary

Geoscience Australia, the nation's premier public sector geoscience organisation, is seeking a skilled professional for seabed and coastal mapping within the Marine and Coastal Geoscience (MCG) Section. Our team

The Marine and Coastal Geoscience (MCG) Section is part of the Oceans, Reefs, Coasts and Antarctic (ORCA) Branch in the Place and Communities Division of Geoscience Australia (GA).

The section provides trusted seabed, coastal and geospatial science that helps build a more complete picture of Australia’s marine and coastal environments. The team delivers data, maps and advice that support environmental stewardship, marine spatial planning and the sustainable management of Australia’s marine estate and maritime jurisdiction, including through Australian Government priorities such as the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative.

The key duties of the position include:

• map, characterise and assess seabed and coastal landforms using geoscience datasets such as bathymetry, sub-bottom acoustic data, seabed sediments, remote sensing and field observations
• integrate evidence to develop geological interpretations, working through uncertainty and clearly explaining your reasoning, assumptions and limitations
• work as part of a multidisciplinary team, drawing on diverse expertise to meet end-user and stakeholder needs
• deliver accurate, defensible and fit-for-purpose seabed mapping products, technical advice and scientific outputs to support environmental stewardship, marine spatial planning and the sustainable management of Australia’s marine estate and maritime jurisdiction
• build and improve seabed mapping procedures, geospatial analysis methods and tools

To be successful in the role you will:

• bring strong geomorphological or geoscience expertise and apply it to seabed and coastal environments, drawing on experience from terrestrial, coastal, sedimentary or marine settings
• work independently and take responsibility for delivering accurate work within agreed timeframes and quality requirements
• identify risks, issues and opportunities in technical work and propose practical solutions to support project delivery and decision-making
• communicate scientific findings clearly through maps, written advice, reports, briefs and presentations, including translating complex science into practical insights for decision-makers
• build and sustain productive working relationships with colleagues, subject-matter experts and stakeholders
• maintain professional knowledge and continue to develop your expertise and skills
• contribute to a positive, inclusive and professional workplace culture, consistent with the APS Values and Code of Conduct

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications

• relevant qualifications and/or experience in Earth, coastal, marine or geospatial science, geomorphology, sedimentology or a related discipline
• experience using GIS or geospatial software for mapping, analysis and/or visualisation
• experience in seabed, coastal, geomorphic, sedimentological or earth-surface interpretation is highly desirable; bathymetry experience is desirable but not essential
