Profectus is seeking an IBM Mainframe Developer to support the ongoing development and sustainment of a core government system in Australia. Join an established team of developers and analysts to implement code changes, resolve issues and keep production systems secure.

This associate role requires solid COBOL and mainframe fundamentals within a highly governed government environment. Canberra onsite with possible Brisbane hybrid options.

Qualifications

• Experience in mainframe COBOL development or relevant qualification with practice
• Knowledge of CICS, JCL, VSAM and DB2
• Understanding of z/OS mainframe OS
• Experience with debugging, telemetry and monitoring tools
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
• Clear written and verbal communication
• Ability to work with cross-functional teams
• Experience with PL/I
• Exposure to IBM MQ Series
• Familiarity with Rocket Data z/Services
• Experience supporting Australian Government systems

Responsibilities

• Write clear, testable and efficient mainframe code to agreed timeframes and milestones
• Work across the full software development lifecycle in line with the agreed methodology
• Produce technical specifications and assess operational feasibility of proposed changes
• Integrate software components into working systems and maintain supporting documentation
• Perform unit and component testing, and support functional and non-functional testing activities
• Prepare time and effort estimates for development work
• Take ownership of issues, following up open questions through to resolution
• Support code deployment and release activities in line with change and cyber security standards
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting, including debugging and remediation of production issues
• Contribute to forward planning so mainframe systems continue to meet demand
• Liaise with third party suppliers and service providers as required
• Share technical knowledge and provide guidance to other team members
• Identify and suggest improvements to development processes and tooling
• Participate in a shared after hours on-call roster

Job description

Profectus is seeking an IBM Mainframe Developer to support the ongoing development and sustainment of a core business system within an agency of the Australian Government. Working as part of an established team of developers, business analysts and project staff, you will deliver mainframe code changes, resolve technical issues and help keep a long standing production system stable and secure. This is an associate level position and would suit a developer with solid COBOL and mainframe fundamentals looking to build their experience in a large, highly governed government environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Write clear, testable and efficient mainframe code to agreed timeframes and milestones

Required Experience

• Demonstrated experience in mainframe application development using COBOL, or a relevant tertiary qualification supported by practical development experience
• Working knowledge of mainframe technologies including CICS, JCL, VSAM and DB2
• Understanding of mainframe operating systems such as z/OS
• Experience using debugging, telemetry and monitoring tools in a mainframe setting
• Strong problem solving and analytical skills, with a methodical approach to fault finding
• Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to translate business requirements and maintain technical documentation
• Ability to work effectively alongside developers, analysts, project managers and business users
• Experience with PL/I
• Exposure to IBM MQ Series
• Familiarity with Rocket Data z/Services
• Previous experience supporting systems within the Australian Government

Security Clearance Requirements

• Must be an Australian Citizen
• Must have an active Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) security clearance
