Job summary

Weir in Artarmon, NSW, is seeking a skilled Machinist/Fitter to maintain and optimise CNC and conventional machine tools onsite. You will diagnose, repair, and calibrate equipment, perform preventive maintenance, and support upgrades with CMMS-driven records.

Qualifications

  • Must have trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering (Cert III).
  • 5+ years’ experience maintaining CNC and conventional machine tools.
  • Strong hydraulic and pneumatic maintenance skills (5+ years).
  • Competent with CMMS for maintenance management and reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on CNC and conventional machine tools and document in CMMS.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, lubrication and basic electrical faults; minimize downtime.
  • Conduct precision alignment, calibration, and machine tool upgrades or relocations.
  • Maintain and improve machine tool reliability and performance; ensure safety and quality standards.
  • Travel minimal; primarily onsite at Artarmon location.

What you'll do
  • Preventive and Predictive Maintenance: Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on CNC and conventional machine tools, conduct inspections and condition monitoring of critical equipment, identify and rectify potential equipment failures before they affect production, and maintain accurate maintenance records within the CMMS system.
  • Breakdown and Corrective Maintenance: Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, lubrication, and basic electrical faults; respond promptly to equipment breakdowns to minimize downtime; repair, replace, and adjust machine components such as ball screws, linear guideways, spindles, gearboxes, bearings, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, and tool changers.
  • Machine Tool Specialist Activities: Perform precision alignment and geometric accuracy checks, conduct laser alignment and machine calibration, install, commission, and relocate machine tools, perform machine rebuilds, retrofits, and major overhauls, analyze recurring equipment failures and implement permanent corrective actions, support machine tool upgrades and automation projects.
  • Daily Role: The successful candidate will be actively engaged in maintaining and improving machine tool reliability and performance, ensuring minimal downtime and high operational efficiency.
  • Success Metrics: Success will be measured by equipment availability, reduced breakdowns, timely maintenance completion, and adherence to safety and quality standards.
  • Travel Requirements: Minimal travel is expected; primarily onsite work at the Artarmon location.

What you’ll bring

Must-haves:

  • Trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering Cert III.
  • Extensive experience maintaining CNC and conventional machine tools (5+ years).
  • Strong skills in hydraulic and pneumatic systems maintenance (5+ years).
  • Competency in using CMMS for maintenance management and reporting.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience with heavy machinery service, fault finding, and repair.
  • Basic MIG welding skills.
  • Confined Space and Work at Heights qualifications.
  • Effective communication and report writing skills.
