Job summary

Lead Mine Scheduling Engineer at Prominent Hill within BHP’s Copper South Australia portfolio. You will shape underground schedules, drive long-term planning and work across geology, geotechnical, ventilation and operations to deliver value.

You will oversee a team of scheduling engineers, remain hands-on with Deswik, and influence development sequencing, stope design and extraction while supporting site expansion and safety priorities.

Qualifications

• Expertise in underground mine scheduling and planning within a production mining environment.
• Advanced capability using Deswik software and scheduling tools to optimise outcomes.
• Understanding of underground mining value drivers: development sequencing, stope design and extraction sequencing, drill and blast, backfill, ventilation and equipment productivity.
• Experience mentoring, coaching or leading technical professionals and contributing to team capability development.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to influence decisions across multiple disciplines.
• Tertiary qualifications in Mining, Geotechnical or Civil Engineering or related discipline.
• Solid experience in underground mining operations.

About Prominent Hill

Prominent Hill is a well-established copper-gold operation within BHP’s Minerals Australia portfolio, with a strong future and ongoing investment.

Located 650km north-west of Adelaide, the site operates across underground and surface mining on an 8/6 FIFO roster.

A major shaft project is supporting underground expansion and extending mine life to at least 2040, creating long-term opportunities across the operation.

It’s a technically complex site where you can build your skills, take on new challenges, and be part of a team where safety and looking out for each other matters.

We currently have a vacancy for a Lead Mine Scheduling Engineer, reporting to the Superintendent Integrated Planning.

About the Role

As the Lead Mine Scheduling Engineer, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of underground mining at Prominent Hill. This is a highly influential technical leadership position where your work will directly impact production performance, mine development priorities, stope sequencing, operational readiness, and long-term value delivery.

You will be at the centre of the planning process, bringing together information from geology, geotechnical engineering, ventilation, operations and technical services to create practical, achievable underground schedules that support both short and long-term business objectives.

This role offers the opportunity to remain technically hands-on while also leading capability development within the scheduling team. You will work in an environment that values collaboration, continuous improvement and innovative thinking, where new ideas are encouraged and practical solutions are embraced.

As Prominent Hill continues to grow through underground expansion and major infrastructure investment, you will help define how the operation evolves over the coming years while building your own pathway into broader Integrated Planning or Technical Services leadership opportunities.

In this role, you will:

• Lead and coach scheduling engineers, fostering a culture focused on quality planning, continuous improvement and technical excellence.
• Develop and maintain integrated underground mine schedules that support operational delivery and long-term business objectives.
• Collaborate closely with geology, geotechnical, ventilation, operations and planning teams to ensure schedules are practical, aligned and achievable.
• Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise in underground scheduling practices and methodologies.
• Apply innovative thinking and continuous improvement principles to enhance planning processes, schedule quality and operational outcomes.
• Remain actively involved in Deswik scheduling activities while contributing to the broader strategic direction of the operation.
• Support planning decisions that optimise production performance, development sequencing and value generation across the mine.

About You

You are an experienced underground mining professional who enjoys solving complex planning challenges and influencing outcomes across a diverse range of stakeholders.

You bring technical scheduling capability combined with a collaborative leadership style and a desire to support the growth and development of others. You are naturally curious, challenge conventional thinking where appropriate, and enjoy finding practical solutions that improve operational performance.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Expertise in underground mine scheduling and planning within a production mining environment.
• Advanced capability using Deswik software and the ability to apply scheduling tools to optimise operational outcomes.
• A well-developed understanding of underground mining value drivers, including development sequencing, stope design and extraction sequencing, drill and blast cycles, backfill management, ventilation interactions and equipment productivity.
• Experience mentoring, coaching or leading technical professionals and contributing to team capability development.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to gather information, align priorities and influence decisions across multiple disciplines.
• Tertiary qualifications in Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• Solid experience working within an underground mining operation.

This position is based at Prominent Hill on an 8/6 FIFO roster, with flights provided from Adelaide, South Australia.
