Job summary

Precision Systems in Canberra is seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to head the technical direction of a small, high-calibre team. You will own end-to-end mechanical design from concept to commissioning and work hands-on on precision systems, including structural, thermal, and vibration analyses.

In this senior role, you will mentor engineers, liaise with manufacturers, and drive rigorous design practices across the group. Canberra-based, relocation considered for the right candidate.

Qualifications

• 12+ years' experience as a Mechanical Engineer with leadership or mentoring.
• Strong analytical foundation with tolerancing and structural/thermal/vibration analysis.
• Background in precision mechanics, robotics or mechatronics.
• Proficiency with SolidWorks and FEA tools (ANSYS or equivalent).

Responsibilities

A well-established Australian advanced technology company is looking for a Lead Mechanical Engineer to head up the technical direction of a small, high-calibre engineering team based in Canberra. This is a senior leadership position designed to bring deep analytical rigour, technical authority, and mentorship into a growing team, working end-to-end on complex, precision-critical hardware.

What you'll do

• Act as technical authority for mechanical design across the team, reviewing and guiding others' work
• Own mechanical design end-to-end, from first concept through analysis, build, and commissioning
• Work hands-on across precision mechanical systems, including structural, thermal, and vibration analysis
• Liaise directly with manufacturers and be involved in the full delivery lifecycle
• Provide technical mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers, building their confidence and analytical capability
• Bring rigour to design and analysis processes, reinforcing good engineering practice across the wider team

What we're looking for

• 12+ years' experience as a Mechanical Engineer, including technical leadership or mentoring of engineering teams
• Strong analytical foundation, comfortable with tolerancing, structural/thermal/vibration analysis as a natural part of design, not an afterthought
• Background in precision mechanics, robotics, or mechatronics
• Proficiency with SolidWorks and FEA tools (ANSYS or equivalent)
• Australian citizenship required

Highly regarded

• Experience in optomechanical design, mounting or housing optical elements (lenses, mirrors, laser systems)
• Exposure to composites
• Familiarity with specialised FEA-to-optical design workflows
• SigFit experience is highly desirable
• CPEng or eligibility for Chartered status
