Job summary

Bluefin Resources is seeking a Lead Data Engineer for a 12-month contract with extension, located in Sydney/Canberra with hybrid work (1 day on-site per week). The role leads data engineering for cloud-based platforms, primarily on Microsoft Azure and Databricks.

You will own data platform delivery, drive team priorities, ensure platform health, and engage senior stakeholders across complex programs. A strong leader with government/regulated sector experience is essential.

Qualifications

• 5+ years leading data engineering or technology teams in complex enterprise environments.
• Hands-on expertise with Microsoft Azure, Databricks, cloud data architecture, ETL/ELT, and data governance.
• Strong stakeholder management and people leadership capability.
• Australian citizen; NV1 security clearance preferred (must be eligible for NV1).
• Tertiary qualification in relevant technology discipline or equivalent experience.

Lead Data Engineer - Federal Government

Location: Sydney/Canberra (hybrid, 1 day/week on-site) Contract:12 months + 12-month extension Rate: $160 - 170/hour (including super) Start: 19th October 2026

About the role

As Manager, Data Engineering, you'll lead multidisciplinary data engineering teams responsible for designing, developing and supporting the Agency's cloud-based data and analytics platforms using Microsoft Azure and Databricks.

You’ll own:

• Team workload, priorities and performance management
• Operational support, incident response and platform health
• Stakeholder engagement and complex delivery programs
• Technical leadership and engineering standards adoption

What we're looking for

• 5+ years leading data engineering or technology teams in complex enterprise (especially government/regulated) environments

• Proven track record delivering and supporting large-scale data platforms
