CAAFLU is currently hiring multiple full-time Legal Practitioners across Alice Springs and Tennant Creek, NT.
Reporting to the Principal Legal Officer, these roles are responsible for providing culturally appropriate legal advice and representation to Aboriginal victim-survivors in the areas of Domestic Violence Orders (DVO's), Victims of Crime Compensation, with occasional Child Protection and Family Law matters. You will work closely with Community Engagement Workers (CEWs) to ensure clients receive wrap-around legal and non-legal support in a culturally respectful way.
This is an opportunity for lawyers motivated by advocacy, fairness and meaningful client outcomes rather than a traditional courtroom-focused career. You will support clients navigating complex legal and social systems, working as part of a small, collaborative team where cultural sensitivity, empathy and a willingness to help wherever needed are essential.
For Tennant Creek-based practitioners, CAAFLU provides a supported transition into the role, including initial training in Alice Springs and ongoing connection with the broader legal team. You will work alongside experienced lawyers and Community Engagement Workers, with senior colleagues providing practical support, introductions to local stakeholders and ongoing guidance as you settle into the community.
More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:
To qualify, you will need to be eligible to hold a restricted or unrestricted legal practising certificate in the Northern Territory. While applications from lawyers at different career stages are welcomed, around 2+ years of post-admission legal experience will be highly regarded.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
You will also need a current ‘C’ Class Driver’s Licence, a Working with Children Clearance, and a clear Criminal History Check.
In addition to your qualifications, you are someone who:
As our ideal candidate, you are a quiet achiever who is motivated by meaningful client outcomes.
You are calm under pressure, a strong listener, and bring an empathetic, personable and culturally sensitive approach to your work. You understand that this is not about pursuing courtroom exposure for its own sake — it is about standing alongside victim-survivors, helping people navigate complex systems and using your legal skills to achieve practical outcomes.
You will also bring the resilience and emotional maturity required to work with sensitive and, at times, confronting matters. Importantly, you will not be expected to navigate those challenges alone. CAAFLU has a highly collaborative approach, with lawyers and Community Engagement Workers working alongside one another and opportunities to debrief and seek support from experienced colleagues.
For those considering Tennant Creek, the people who tend to thrive are those who embrace the experience beyond the working day. You may enjoy the outdoors, camping, sport, community activities or simply getting to know the people around you. Building connections outside of work can make Tennant Creek an incredibly rewarding place to live while developing legal experience that would be difficult to gain elsewhere.
The salary for this position ranges from $100,000 to $115,000 per annum, commensurate with skills and experience. In addition, the role offers a variety of benefits, including:
