Gilbert + Tobin, a leading Australian firm, seeks a senior competition lawyer to join the CCMR Practice in Sydney. You will work on high-profile mergers, regulatory matters and litigation, collaborating with partners and clients to deliver strategic advice.

We welcome candidates with 4-7+ years post-admission, strong drafting skills, and a deep interest in competition and consumer law. The role offers a supportive environment, substantial leave, and a range of benefits in a city-based office.

Qualifications

• 4-7+ years post-admission experience in Competition Law and regulatory matters.
• Strong drafting and advice writing skills.
• Superior technical knowledge and a genuine interest in competition and consumer law.
• Ability to work effectively with clients and autonomously or in a team.
• Desire to develop and progress quickly.

Responsibilities

• Involve in mergers and acquisitions, including ACCC clearances.
• Handle competition law issues from joint ventures and strategic alliances.
• Represent in ACCC investigations, enforcement proceedings and litigation, including cartel leniency matters.
• Engage in criminal investigations under the CCA where relevant.
• Assist with regulatory design and implementation for government entities in the Asia Pacific region.
• Contribute to legislative reform submissions and regulatory reviews such as Harper Review.
• Address misleading and deceptive conduct and consumer protection issues.

About The Role

As a pivotal member of the CCMR Practice you will have the opportunity to be involved in:

• Mergers and acquisitions, including ACCC clearances.
• Competition law issues arising from joint ventures and strategic alliances.
• ACCC investigations, enforcement proceedings and litigation, including representing cartel leniency applicants in Australia and Asia Pacific and representing parties in civil damages proceedings.
• Criminal investigations under the CCA, now that criminal sanctions apply for cartel conduct.
• Access regimes, economic regulation and pricing decisions including representing regulators and regulated businesses.
• Regulatory design and implementation for government entities in the Asia Pacific region, including telecommunications, financial services, energy and water.
• Legislative reform, including preparing submissions to government and regulatory reviews such as the Harper Review.
• Misleading and deceptive conduct, consumer protection and unconscionability issues.

About You

As our successful candidate you should be able to demonstrate a desire, and the capacity, to work on high profile and technically challenging transactions. You should be an ambitious high performer, looking to work in an environment where your performance will be duly recognised and rewarded accordingly. In addition, you will have:

• 4 - 7+ years post-admission experience in Competition Law and regulatory matters
• Strong drafting and advice writing skills
• Superior technical knowledge and a genuine interest in competition and consumer law
• The ability to work effectively with clients
• The ability to work autonomously and in a team environment
• A desire to develop and progress quickly
