Job summary

Bluethumb, Australia’s largest online art marketplace, is seeking a confident Ruby on Rails developer to join a small engineering team and help build great product. You will work with founders in a collaborative environment across Australia and our distributed RoR engineers in Asia and Australia.

As a full-stack developer you’ll handle front-end (Vanilla, Vue.js) and back-end (Ruby, Rails, Hanami) tasks, with occasional DevOps involvement (Docker, AWS).

Qualifications

• At least 2 years of trackable production Ruby on Rails experience.
• Experience in front-end development and knowledge of DevOps, QA or Data Science is a plus.
• Full-stack capability with front-end (Vanilla, Vue.js) and back-end (Ruby, Rails, Hanami).
• Able to demonstrate advanced rspec usage and participate in code reviews.

Responsibilities

• Build features and improve user experience on Bluethumb’s RoR platform.
• Collaborate across front-end and back-end teams, and with founders.
• Contribute to DevOps and QA processes as part of a small, agile engineering team.

Work with the Founders in Adelaide & Melbourne, and our team of in-house RoR engineers in Singapore, Thailand, Bali & Australia to continually build new features and improve existing UX.

As a little background, Bluethumb is Australia’s largest online art marketplace. We have over 17,000 artists and sell their art directly to collectors. We’re passionate about building incredible tech, our user testing program and building whatever we need to grow.

Requirements

Experience

At least 2 years of trackable production Ruby on Rails experience (bootcamps are not considered as such). To succeed in this role, along with Ruby and Rails, you will be confident and experienced in front-end development and ideally also have knowledge in DevOps, QA or Data Science.

All our developers are full-stack and get really varied new experience; with a mix of front-end (solid level Vanilla and Vue.js) , back-end (Ruby, Rails, Hanami) and DevOps (Docker Swarm/AWS) , doing short sprints and bigger projects. Our ideal candidate:

• – Ruby on Rails savvy
• – Has production experience with Elasticsearch and Postgres
• – Is able to demonstrate an advanced level of rspec usage
• – Familiar with giving and taking code reviews
• – Comfortable with occasional pair programming
• – Ready to adjust to development guidelines

Location

This can be a remote role, but you MUST be located in a similar timezone to Australia (AEST) with at least 5 hours overlap (please check for comparison) . We have offices in Adelaide & Melbourne, so bonus points if you are in either of these two cities.

Bluethumb is one of Australia’s most exciting creative technology companies and Australia’s largest online art marketplace, which is VC funded and has been growing strongly now for over 7 years. We are a custom RoR website with a native iOS app. You’ll work in a small team of awesome engineers focussed on shipping great product, in a complex environment.

Work in fun, friendly team with heaps of experience. We work on a level playing field across the engineering team and directly with the founders. There’s no bureaucracy.

Flexible work hours. We work hard but don’t deploy on Fridays!

Balanced workload using Trello to easily manage all tasks & projects.

Although we utilize RoR as our pillars we also experiment with other solutions if they prove worthy.

We’re no longer an early stage startup, there’s more security, but we’re still growing very fast and there is plenty of low hanging fruits. Sometimes small changes have a big impact which makes this work really rewarding.

The work you do helps Australian artists build their careers. Many have made their career break on Bluethumb and rely on it for a living. The tech we build is very valuable.
