Job summary

NSW Health is seeking Emergency Medicine specialists to join the Shellharbour and Wollongong EDs within the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District. The roles offer permanent and partial‑time opportunities in a dynamic, teaching‑focused environment.

The successful applicants will join a FACEM‑led team, with strong emphasis on clinical excellence and education. ACEM training and supervision are integral to the role, with opportunities to contribute to the evolving ED campus plans.

Qualifications

• Fellowship in Emergency Medicine or eligibility for FACEM
• Active involvement in high-quality clinical care and teaching
• Experience in acute and trauma care settings recommended

Responsibilities

• Provide expert emergency medical care in a busy ED with ACEM accreditation
• Lead and participate in teaching, supervision and multidisciplinary rounds
• Contribute to ongoing quality improvement and training initiatives

Wollongong Hospital - 1.0 FTE Permanent and 0.25 Temporary until 2 January 2028

Shellharbour ED is a dynamic, FACEM-led department providing high-quality emergency care to a large and rapidly growing community. Successful applicants will join an established multidisciplinary team with a strong focus on clinical excellence, education and specialist training. The department sees approximately 130 presentations per day and is both an ACEM-accredited training site and an ACEM hub for ultrasound training, providing a rich environment for teaching, supervision and professional development.

In 2027, Shellharbour Hospital will transition to the new hospital campus, heralding a major period of growth and development for the Emergency Department. This is an exceptional opportunity to join an established and ambitious FACEM team at a defining point in the department’s evolution, contribute to the development of a contemporary Emergency Department, and play a meaningful role in shaping the future of emergency care at Shellharbour Hospital.

Within Wollongong ED, Staff Specialists will be expected to work in a multi-disciplinary team, delivering care to our diverse community in this large regional / referral hospital. Wollongong is one of the busiest EDs outside of Sydney seeing approximately 220 visits per day. Wollongong ED is fully accredited for training for ACEM trainees and teaches medical students from the University of Wollongong.

Shellharbour Hospital is a busy acute care facility which provides emergency services, elective surgical services, general medicine, antenatal and primary family health care, satellite renal dialysis, and adolescent and adult mental health services on site. It's an accredited healthcare facility with the Australian Council on Health Care Standards (ACHS) and is recognised as providing a high standard of care to the community.

Located on the beautiful South Coast of NSW, Shellharbour is known for its spectacular coastal scenery and is only a little over a 1.5 hour drive from Sydney.

Wollongong Hospital is the Illawarra Shoalhaven’s major referral and teaching hospital and has a bed-base count of more than 500. The campus, which incorporates the Illawarra Regional Cancer Care Centre, provides a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services.

Wollongong is located an hour’s drive south of Sydney on a narrow coastal strip bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south, the Tasman Sea to the east and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west.
